00:03.21 | Gnarfoz | the last bit is the only reason, tbh |
00:03.35 | znf | why? |
00:03.44 | znf | it's expensive as fuck to deploy an old standard |
00:04.02 | znf | They actually deploy the cheapest LTE - TDD |
00:04.19 | Gnarfoz | it's more likely new stuff is expensive because it's new ^^ |
00:04.33 | Gnarfoz | GSM reaches more customers, has higher reach |
00:04.45 | Gnarfoz | s/ reach/ range/ |
00:04.49 | Gnarfoz | fuuuuuuu |
00:04.57 | Gnarfoz | 2 am regexes |
00:05.47 | Gnarfoz | yes, it's way more complicated, but hey... you can download GSM base stations. |
00:05.57 | Gnarfoz | just need a licence for it to not be illegal |
00:06.04 | Gnarfoz | (running it, that is) |
00:07.31 | znf | you mean by having an older tech, compatible with more devices? yes sure |
00:07.51 | znf | but they can get away with it by being a new network that focuses around mobile data |
00:09.27 | Fisker | Did you upgrade from win 8 Gnarfoz ? |
00:09.45 | Gnarfoz | no |
00:09.59 | Fisker | Weird |

00:10.10 | Gnarfoz | (and I've changed those Intel drivers a million times during the last round of DPC fun) |
00:10.16 | Fisker | Ah okay |
00:10.32 | znf | got vmware installed? |
00:10.35 | Gnarfoz | I guess Windows might have replaced them with its own, considering "driver provider" said "Microsoft" 5 minutes ago |
00:10.53 | znf | or virtualbox |
00:10.56 | Fisker | You can check the driver history I guess |
00:10.57 | Gnarfoz | ...and that it was only listing that one driver file, whereas the Intel drivers list 5 |
00:11.11 | Gnarfoz | (and it's using the ndis 6.5 ones, so that's good) |
00:11.35 | Gnarfoz | vmware is not for installing on other OSes, silly pea! :P |
00:11.52 | Gnarfoz | (yes I know vmware workstation exists, no, I don't know why! :P) |
00:12.09 | Gnarfoz | (and no to both) |

00:14.49 | Gnarfoz | well, vmware also has virtual switches |
00:15.25 | Gnarfoz | not sure why you would need to use them with one software but not the other... I'm sure hyper-v allows bridging a VM's network, too? |
00:16.08 | znf | probably, I honestly don't know |
00:16.11 | Gnarfoz | the primary reason I don't have hyper-v enabled is it disables cpu power management and turbo boost |

13:35.45 | nebula | something to the effect of "SUF doesn't need to do custom unit frames, why does PB4 have all that code for it" |
13:35.54 | nebula | erm, custom unit frame popups |
13:36.17 | nevcairiel | personally i'm more annoyed if setfocus breaks then having a few more options |
13:36.26 | Torhal | I don't even know what that means, but if that's his actual reasoning you should probably snother him with a pillow. |
13:36.52 | nevcairiel | should ask thedan why header-driven raid frames have such a limited dropdown |
13:36.58 | nebula | Torhal: right click on a raid unit frame, it has a stripped down option list |
13:37.00 | nevcairiel | their own compact raid frames override it with a fully featured one |
13:37.14 | nebula | really? lol |
13:37.23 | Torhal | Ah |
13:37.29 | nevcairiel | of course they can do that because its all untainted code |
13:38.13 | nevcairiel | there is two types of raid frame popups, either type "RAID" or type "RAID_PLAYER", i dont know why his distinction exists, but alas the first is the short empty one, and the second is the full one |
13:38.29 | nevcairiel | seems almost like a bug that the first one is always used |
13:39.56 | nevcairiel | https://www.townlong-yak.com/framexml/beta/SecureTemplates.lua#196 |
13:40.02 | nevcairiel | that functio nselects the dropdown |
13:41.14 | nevcairiel | i wonder if you could break it by using "RAID1" as a unit :p |
13:41.31 | nebula | lol |
13:41.37 | nebula | clever |
13:41.48 | nevcairiel | not sure you can override the unit in header frames tho |
13:41.59 | nevcairiel | secureDropdown.unit = string.lower(unit); |
13:42.00 | nevcairiel | guess not |
13:42.01 | nevcairiel | :D |
13:43.08 | nebula | i feel like that UnitIsPlayer check should be at the top, not the bottom |
13:43.47 | nevcairiel | incidentally the "PARTY" type is a fully-featured type |
13:43.55 | nevcairiel | but for some reason tehre is both RAID and RAID_PLAER |
13:43.57 | nevcairiel | PLAYER* |
13:44.01 | nebula | so if you click on the target of someone in the raid targeting someone else in the raid, you'd get the full menu |
13:44.42 | nevcairiel | i think it does that anyway? only the pure raid frames dont work |
13:46.11 | nevcairiel | all the other checks seem fine |
13:47.02 | nebula | like if you have an raid header with the suffix target, you could have someone target themself and get the short menu for the raid unit and the full for the target, that seems silly |
13:48.17 | nevcairiel | party and raid should probably just be removed |
13:48.28 | nevcairiel | all the others are single units or non-player units |

22:02.43 | srge | small shops can't really compete with amazon and newegg in the US. they have too much overhead. plus the whole tax loophole if you order in a state that the big places don't have a presence in. |

22:17.21 | srge | 30 days or so and you're screwed here. have to deal with the manufacturer. usually a good idea to buy evga because of that alone |
22:17.48 | nevcairiel | we typically have 2 years on everything, the first year the shop has to pretty much accept any defective returns, in the second year it gets a bit more complicated but most shops just take it anyway |
22:19.34 | Gnarfoz | (after 6 months, they put the burden of proof that the failure you have was caused by a defect already in place at the time of sale on you. before that, it's the vendor who has to prove the opposite) |

23:17.45 | Gnarfoz | even my 9 disks are quite noisy in total, even though they're on rubber... thingies (which admittedly are quite flimsy, they're just what Fractal includes). but the case's HDD trays are also flimsy... and I didn't pick particularly quiet HDDs. |
23:17.57 | Gnarfoz | are yours 7200 or 5400, nevcairiel? |
23:18.04 | nevcairiel | "smart" |
23:18.08 | nevcairiel | which probably means 5400 |
23:18.50 | Gnarfoz | yeah... I think mine was a noticeable bit quieter when I still had almost all WD greens |
23:19.05 | nevcairiel | mine are mostly reds now with a few greens |
23:19.30 | Gnarfoz | now it's all 7200 hitachi/toshiba except for 1 remaining WD (which isn't currently in use) |
23:20.38 | Gnarfoz | I just realized, I'd have to buy a GPU for the server, haha |
23:20.58 | Gnarfoz | my board is a p67, it can't use the sandy bridge iGPU |
23:21.44 | Gnarfoz | I could use my 8800 GTX |
23:22.27 | Gnarfoz | it can have a fight with the HDDs for who's loudest |
23:22.34 | nevcairiel | haha |
23:23.44 | Gnarfoz | wow, 1070 is almost double the 780's performance in many of the bench tests |
23:24.26 | Gnarfoz | 2 generations and suddenly the model "one down" is double the perfomance :D |
23:24.45 | Gnarfoz | can't we have someting like that for CPUs? :P |
23:25.12 | nevcairiel | pascal was really quite the exception here, the 1070 is like still beating the titan x |
23:25.25 | Gnarfoz | are there mainboards that accommodate 2 or even 3 slot GPUs by not putting pcie x1 slots there that I might actually want to use? |
23:25.36 | nevcairiel | there is always some kind of slot there |
23:25.44 | Gnarfoz | well, x86 is kind of ready for such an exception |
23:26.07 | nevcairiel | you'll just have to figure out how many slots you really want to use |
23:26.16 | Gnarfoz | unless you can make use of more cores, anything past sandy bridge has been very meh ^^ |
23:26.39 | Gnarfoz | wtb consumer board that supports LRDIMMs |
23:26.41 | nevcairiel | well from sandy to skylake, the generational improvements did accumulate to quite a bit |
23:26.56 | Gnarfoz | true, but I still just don't need them xD |
23:27.19 | Gnarfoz | I guess they would allow me to use x264 for streaming instead of nvenc ;) |
23:27.42 | Gnarfoz | (although that's a perfecet example of "more cores would solve that, too") |
23:28.03 | nevcairiel | can only hope amd manages to build a high-end CPU again to give intel something to work for .... but, so far it doesnt seem like that will be the case |
23:28.07 | Gnarfoz | bought the wrong RAM for a server, now we're sitting on 256 GB DDR4 LRDIMMs |
23:28.58 | nevcairiel | best-case estimates say Zen will maybe reach broadwell performance levels, but at the time of its release thats already 2 generations behind intel again |
23:29.34 | Gnarfoz | when is it due? |
23:29.44 | nevcairiel | h1 2017 or so |
23:29.47 | Gnarfoz | I mean it's not even been demo'd yet, let alone released |
23:30.25 | nevcairiel | some optimistic rumors put it even into q4 2016, but i dont see that happening |
23:30.36 | Gnarfoz | I guess AMD can consider themselves lucky that Intel seems to have finally hit a wall with manufacturing sizes |
23:30.47 | nevcairiel | slowed down at least |
23:30.52 | nevcairiel | 10nm still coming next year |
23:31.07 | Gnarfoz | I thought they had recently said they're going to stretch this node even further? |
23:31.34 | nevcairiel | they have |
23:31.47 | nevcairiel | it was supposed to be out this year |
23:32.40 | Gnarfoz | hmmm maybe I just dreamed that, I thought they had put an additional one somewhere in there (i.e. skylake, kaby, cannon + X) |
23:32.54 | nevcairiel | kaby is the additional one |
23:33.09 | nevcairiel | CNL was delayed |
23:33.18 | nevcairiel | (cannonlake) |
23:33.35 | nevcairiel | kaby will still be on 14nm |
23:33.48 | nevcairiel | but CNL should launch next year as well, although late in the year |
23:34.01 | Stanzilla | anything else new in kaby? |
23:34.18 | nevcairiel | mostly GPU and media shit, nothing worth mentioning |
23:34.35 | nevcairiel | the platform gets usb 3.1 gen2 |
23:34.40 | Stanzilla | so probably the worst gen to pick to upgrade? |
23:34.57 | nevcairiel | not that different to any before |
23:35.26 | nevcairiel | skylake also didnt offer much new interesting things |
23:35.27 | Gnarfoz | it's all just minor moves |
23:35.44 | nevcairiel | CNL is the first to offer new things again, but how much that makes a difference |
23:36.11 | Stanzilla | whats new there |
23:36.59 | nevcairiel | its 10nm at least, which could bump up performance |
23:37.21 | nevcairiel | the one after that, ice lake, is the new microarchitecture, but thats like 2018 |
23:38.22 | Stanzilla | meh |
23:38.37 | Gnarfoz | is there really much point in getting a 6700K vs. a 6600K? |
23:38.58 | nevcairiel | personally i like hyperthreading, but mine isnt a puire gaming system |
23:39.02 | Gnarfoz | they're 100⬠apart, but considering it's K, I should easily be able to make up the difference |
23:39.03 | nevcairiel | for gaming, probably not |
23:39.05 | Gnarfoz | oooh |
23:39.10 | Gnarfoz | 6600 is i5 |
23:39.12 | Gnarfoz | bleh |
23:39.36 | Gnarfoz | nah, I like HT as well |
23:39.55 | Gnarfoz | and 6700 vs 6700K is ~25⬠|
23:40.23 | nevcairiel | Stanzilla: rumors have it that CNL will also bring more cores to mainstream |
23:40.48 | nevcairiel | but ~rumors~ |
23:40.53 | Gnarfoz | call Adele |
23:40.55 | Stanzilla | cnl was late 2017, right? |
23:40.59 | nevcairiel | probably |
23:41.11 | Stanzilla | mkay |
23:42.47 | nevcairiel | AMD Zen is supposedly launching with up to 8 cores, so maybe Intel wants to follow in the mainstream market |
23:42.59 | nevcairiel | but who knows if AMD is even doing that |
23:46.27 | Gnarfoz | or if AMD even still exists by then |
23:46.35 | Gnarfoz | ^^ |
23:46.47 | Megalon | :D |
23:47.03 | nevcairiel | its not like I'm a fan of AMD, but competition is always a good thing |
23:47.11 | nevcairiel | so dont die! |
23:47.20 | Gnarfoz | yeah, for sure |
23:47.37 | Gnarfoz | they've not been too great at it this last... long while |
23:49.01 | Gnarfoz | interesting, 16 GB DDR4 modules are basically the same price as 8 GB DDR4 modules, per GB |
23:49.10 | Gnarfoz | no point in buying 8 GB modules, then |
23:49.26 | nevcairiel | if your board does 16gb modules |
23:49.35 | nevcairiel | not all do |
23:49.39 | Gnarfoz | why would my board care, the memory controller is in the cpu? |
23:49.41 | Megalon | does *foz's 16gb modules |
23:49.59 | nevcairiel | dont ask me, board makers publish memory compat lists =p |
23:50.02 | Gnarfoz | ^^ |
23:50.22 | Ressy | Usually, its cuz some RAM provides too much voltage, or not enough. |
23:50.33 | Gnarfoz | RAM doesn't provide voltage |
23:50.45 | Ressy | bah. You kow what I mean. |
23:50.50 | Gnarfoz | (and the voltage they require doesn't vary with module size) |
23:50.52 | Megalon | oh so ram is like a battery! |
23:50.53 | Ressy | my brain is fried this week. |
23:51.00 | Gnarfoz | replace it with RAM! |
23:51.08 | Megalon | fried brains mmmmm |
23:51.27 | Gnarfoz | anyway, if the mainboard didn't have a say in the matter, I'd have just swapped all the existing LRDIMM modules in that server to one CPU and put the new RDIMMs on the other CPU ^^ |
23:51.40 | Ressy | My grampa died Sunday, I've barely slept since, visitation is tomorrow, funeral is friday. yay. |
23:51.54 | Gnarfoz | I might still try that just for kicks, but I'm pretty sure it'll just yell "MIXED MEMORY CONFIGURATION" at me again |
23:52.06 | Gnarfoz | Ressy: condolences |
23:52.15 | Ressy | thx |

23:52.50 | Stanzilla | Ressy: my condolences :( |
23:53.02 | Gnarfoz | I wonder how it came to be that we ordered this one server with LRDIMMs and all other ones with RDIMMs~ |
23:53.52 | Gnarfoz | also re: memory controller is in the CPU: Skylake's memory controller supports up to DDR4-2133... why again is it that DDR4-2400 would still grant me a performance benefit? |
23:53.56 | Megalon | probably a tpye somewhere :P |
23:54.12 | Megalon | damn typoes! |
23:54.47 | Gnarfoz | Megalon: yeah, on Dell's product list... they describe the modules as "LEAD REDUCED". while I'm sure they used lead-free solder on them (RoHS requires that anyway), I'm sure they atually meant "LOAD REDUCED" (which the LR in LRDIMM stands for) |

23:55.08 | Ressy | lol |
23:56.45 | Gnarfoz | ...that's just a cop-out, though, my colleague just didn't check properly. that typo is in the detail description, the list entry itself clearly says LRDIMM. and smartypants me verified his choice of module by verifying it's compatible with the intended server. Which it is. Just not in combination with the existing RAM of a different type. |
23:56.49 | Gnarfoz | derp~ |
23:56.59 | Gnarfoz | at least it's DDR4, so we'll get to use it sooner or later |
