00:00.19infobotcomcast has karma of -148
00:00.25fugue88Getting there...
00:00.58herlo-666 is the goal, right?
00:01.33fugue88Wherever "deep freeze" is.
00:01.40fugue88-666 might well work for that.
00:01.49herlo~IE
00:01.49infoboti guess ie is the domain suffix for Ireland, or Internet Explorer, or the browser of the Devil, or the worst browser in the entire universe and it should be eliminated by any means possible
00:01.53herlo~karma IE
00:01.53infobotie has karma of -666
00:01.57herlofugue88: like that?

00:02.12fugue88Yeah, but I wouldn't be too worried about keeping comcast from going lower.
00:02.28fugue88In fact, it might be nice to explore the limits of infobot's number stack.

14:12.32opapoWhy would a working operating system turn "Read-only"?
14:14.22opapothe last time that it turned read only and I restarted it I had to fsck the filesystem.  How does this happen?
14:15.48fugue88Filesystems will flip to read-only in a panic mode, when the fs driver detects some condition in the metadata that "should never happen."
14:16.09fugue88That's actually configurable for most fs's.  You can ask it to continue anyway, or unmount the filesystem (I think).
14:16.34fugue88It can be caused by bad sectors, but I saw a lot of problems
14:16.48fugue88with an external hdd over usb with a flaky power converter.
14:16.53fugue88And LVM running on top.
14:17.25fugue88LVM would lie to the filesystem about write barriers, stuff would get out of sequence, and the power would flip, leaving the fs driver's idea of what's on the platter very different from reality,
14:17.31fugue88and causing inconsistencies.
14:17.40fugue88Removing LVM fixed that for me.
14:19.02josephpagodaso i've got a hostname like
14:19.05josephpagodatestserver4
14:19.21josephpagodaso i'm wanting to run "hostname | something" to strip the number off
14:19.29josephpagodawhat's the best approach for that?
14:19.47fugue88hostname | sed -r 's/[0-9]//g'
14:20.03fugue88Not sure -r is necessary, I just default to it.
14:20.13josephpagodawhat does the r do?
14:20.19fugue88man sed
14:20.26fugue88/-r
14:20.53fugue88josephpagoda: If you're already in a bash shell script, there's a quicker way...
14:21.11josephpagodathis'll be called be a ruby script
14:21.46fugue88Oh.
14:21.53fugue88Well, then.
14:24.27opapofugue88: this is a VM and just got switched to different hardware.  We have had issues with this since the migration.
14:24.58opapoI will ask the VM administrator to check the hardware.  Then I will check for lvm
14:25.55opapoI remember now I do have lvm because I am connected to an iSCSI drive
14:26.34opapoThere are I/O errors on the console and it is complaining about bad sectors on the disk.
14:27.03opapoThe VM is on a raided SAN
14:27.15fugue88When the OS starts to see bad sectors, the drive has run out of hidden sectors to invisibly remap.  You should consider the drive toast.
14:27.49josephpagodafugue88: thanks for your help w/ that
14:27.52josephpagodai always forget about sed
14:27.55josephpagodabut it's a nice tool
14:28.20fugue88josephpagoda: Yeah, it is.  Wish we could say the same about Ruby.  ;P
14:28.36josephpagoda:P
14:28.47josephpagodai hadn't ever used the -r command
14:28.55josephpagodai guess my regex hasn't ever been that ninja like to require it
14:28.58josephpagoda:-P
14:30.00opapoI just looked up sed.  does -r allow you to use more perlesque regex's
14:31.11fugue88Yes-ish.
14:32.05opapomore than normal?  I would prefer that.
14:32.54fugue88opapo: The info page states that it basically changes escaping for ?+(){}.
14:33.15fugue88In normal mode, they match literally, unless escaped, in which case they acquire their regex meanings.
14:33.34fugue88In -r (extended) mode, they have regex meaning, unless escaped, in which case they match literally.
14:34.29opapook
14:34.48opapoI was hoping to be able to use \d, \s etc.

18:40.03opaposhalkie: what is netsplit?
18:40.36goozbachopapo: it's when one IRC server gets disconnected from the others
18:40.38herloopapo: it's when the irc servers you are on split off and reboot or cause some sort of outage. Usually, you are logged out...
18:40.43goozbachwe were all connected to different servers
18:40.46herloif it affects you...
18:41.15shalkieI was going by the *.net *split that registered when he got disconnected.
18:41.20shalkieGranted not foolproof...
18:41.28opapoI did see (*net *split) with everyone disconnected
18:42.12opapoI couldn't just connect.
18:42.16herloopapo: except that it was you, not us :)
18:42.31opapoI had to quit my irc program and then login, reconnect and then I was good
18:43.06herloyup
18:43.33opapoSo, to sum up everyone on the server I connected to was disconnected like me (only this time it was just me
18:43.42opapoHow often does this happen?
18:44.20herlonot too much
18:44.29herlomaybe once or twice a month, lately.
18:44.39herloI've seen it happen several times in a day
18:45.31opapoIs there a need to look for a different solution or offer services to freenode?
18:56.52shalkieProbably not, though I think they always like the offer of servers.
