15:20.57herlonotes that geek lunch isn't something that UTOS has to plan, but we'll help promote
15:21.33nibb13ah, i thought it was a bit more formal

15:29.30bbeattieherlo: I've been thinking and the 'Weather with Linux' isn't something I'm too sure will get a high number of attendees as there aren't many people who would be into it.  How do the Birds of a Feather meetings going to be handled?  I'm wondering if it would be better to just make myself available during a certain time to answer questions (as weather under linux is really diverse and there dozens of ways to do it depending on what hardware and what you want t
15:35.34herlobbeattie: yeah, that might be good
15:35.46herlobbeattie: BoFs are in the evening for about 45 minutes
15:35.52herlosessions
15:36.02bbeattiesessions: what are some examples of past BoF?
15:36.20herloum, let me look
15:36.33herlobbeattie: http://2009.utosc.com/presentation/cat/14/
15:36.39herlothat's the list from last year
15:38.13bbeattiek, let me think about that and home automation, I might just group those two since they often go together.. when are submissions due? midnight 31st or midnight 1st?
15:51.25thaddeusqwishes submissions were always due at 11:59 pm to avoid the whole midnight of which night issue.

16:47.27herlobbeattie: did you know that you can edit and delete your presentations?  I see that you have two on zoneminder, was that intentional??
16:47.50bbeattieOne is a presentation, the other is the hands on lab
16:48.12bbeattieeven if I do just one presentation, I can bring in hardware for the hands on lab for both
16:48.31bbeattieis one not marked for the lab?
16:49.30herlobbeattie: oh, they are both marked as lab
16:49.45bbeattie.. I'll edit, one moment
16:49.54herlothat makes sense, if you just change that, it's cool
16:52.00herlobtw, try-it-lab stuff is just an hour long, if you need it to be longer, we can do a 2-part lab
16:52.07herloI think there will be a few of those in the sessions...
16:52.35herlobbeattie: in fact, the presentation followed by a lab would be pretty *awesome*
16:52.47bbeattie.. oh, in previous years you had the lab where I could leave equipment for people to stop in whenever and try out
16:53.06bbeattiethat's what I thought the hands on lab was.
16:53.14herlowe could do that, but last year we had it hands-on instruction
16:53.20herloworked better
16:53.36herloif you want to just be in there to answer questions for an hour or something though, that could work...
16:53.53herloi'm flexible with it.  Maybe a table in the hall would work too
16:54.18herlothen we could put up a flyer saying, come see my presentatino at X time in room Y
16:54.26herloso it's doable
16:54.26thaddeusqMaybe a table in the bathroom would work too. :)
16:54.31herlothaddeusq: for you, sure
16:54.56herloplus we could put the camera in there just so people can watch what's going on at the show floor while they pee
16:55.11herlos/camera/video screen/
16:55.33thaddeusqherlo: That'd be awesome
16:55.42bbeattieMythTV, XBMC are something that you can give a presentation but what hooks someone is when they can sit down and see what it can/can't do.  Zoneminder is something that you have to customize to an install so a presentation can only cover one item (ie: a single IP camera) but the lab lets people see how difficult zoneminder can be and then I can be around to answer questions for how to do specifically what they want to
16:56.03herlobbeattie: we'll plan on giving you some space for sure
16:56.10herlonot sure where yet, but we'll get it worked out
16:59.03bbeattieI would have at most 3 systems, 1u rack for zoneminder, mid tower for mythtv/mediatomb (and a ps3 to show mediatomb), and a tiny htpc with XBMC (it's one that you buy and it comes with XBMC already installed).
16:59.53bbeattieI know last time I came (two years ago) there was the room in the basement for hands on stuff, it didn't get much traffic but that's fine with me, I just know I won't be around all the time in the lab to make sure an IP camera doesn't walk off.
17:01.06bbeattie... a "Showroom" for utosc could be nice, let people put things from presentations there, books about topics covered (for jsmith), show hardware, place for literature, etc.
17:01.44herloyeah
17:02.11herlothere's a showroom at the conference.  We generaly could have an area where people can come and see working examples of some of the presentations
17:02.14herloI like this idea
17:02.18bbeattiealso it could let people see stuff before presentations so it could help them decide if it's something they want to see
17:02.38herloI'm sure we could corner off something good and have a volunteer or two sit there to watch that nothing walks off
17:03.55fugue88It's typically been, um, difficult, to keep volunteers at a post for any lengthy period of time.
17:04.42herlofugue88: well, we can have a few rotate in and out
17:04.51herloplus if we train them, I think it's doable
17:04.58fugue88okay.
17:05.01herloin 2008, it was simpler than last year
17:05.30herlobut I think it takes someone with time to manage them.  Jayce^ had too many other things during the conference to really do both things, thus certain items suffered
17:05.52fugue88Heh, last year a couple of room managers decided to just walk away from their rooms, and we missed a few presentations because of it.
17:06.02herlothis is not a dig on Jayce^ btw
17:06.06fugue88Agreed.
17:06.18herloyeah, that *should* *not* happen!
17:06.32fugue88Yeah, might be a good idea for the Volunteer Manager to walk around and chit-chat with volunteers, make sure they're doing okay, &c, every hour or so.
17:06.48herloyup
17:06.51fugue88"Still having fun?  Need a break?  Food?"
17:06.55herloyup
17:08.56herloso, I have to run and catch a plane, I will hopefully be back on in a few hours at most
17:09.01herlottfn
17:09.09GateI would be willing to plant a laptop in such a display with a running demo of my presentation
17:17.52Jayce^hey, quit picking on me when I normally can't respond!!!!!
17:17.57Jayce^why is herlo always so mean :(
17:18.19Jayce^good, dbrady just got his proposal in.. that should be a good one
