20:21.00rwpJunicchi, What is the exact command you are running?
20:21.41rwpJunicchi, Normally /var/cache/apt/archives/partial is owned by the _apt user.  But if for whatever reason that fails (Permission denied in your case) then the download is done as root and that warning message printed.
20:22.53rwpNormally when run as root it will run a non-priviledged process as the _apt user for the download.  This is sometimes defeated by people trying to avoid running as root, breaking the strategy and actually causing more risk by forcing the run as root.
20:25.42rwpIt's also possible that people have a .deb file "in hand" in the local directory but it is not readable by all (including _apt) and therefore installing the ./foo.deb file must use root to read that file.  In which case chmod a+r to the ./foo.deb file to make it readable by all (including _apt).
20:38.38Junicchirwp: i was using sudo apt install ./foo.deb
20:40.10Junicchiwill try a+r permissons but weird thing is that i already installed tons of packages before until updating apt

21:15.53rwpJunicchi, In that case with your updated description I think it likely that it was permissions on the ./foo.deb file that were not a+r as that would cause the message.
21:16.33rwpAnd then I think that your other foo-other.deb files were a+r and therefore they did not trigger any warnings.
21:17.04rwpAnd of course doing a normal installation from the network will automatically have the correct permissions so again no warnings there.

22:40.05lfhI'm trying to get the live beowulf media running, but it hangs after grub on nothing specific. I am trying run from a usb that is created by simply dd'ing the iso unto it. USB is good, it works with BSD distros no problem. However I haven't been able to make it work with new linux distros either (I had hoped to find a different to help debug this so I could get devuan). Is there anything I can do
22:40.06lfhto get more verbose error messages? I already tried acpi=off and nomodeset, no dice.
22:44.52*** join/#devuan pablocastellanos (~emergency@li79-248.members.linode.com)
22:50.51lfhThe last line before it hangs is "(uninitialized): registered PHC clock" for my network card, in failsafe mode. Seemingly nothing erroneous, but it scross too fast to get a good look. Keyboard is powered but unresponsive at that point.
22:52.34lfhIn non-failsafe mode (whether or not loading into ram), the last line is instead some stuff about nouveau (nothing seemingly erroneous), then [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query. and then it hangs.
22:57.48fsmithredlfh, is this a uefi system?
23:03.18fsmithredoh well, I have to go.
23:08.39*** join/#devuan tsadok (~weirdidio@cpe-174-105-122-60.columbus.res.rr.com)
23:08.54masonArgh. I need a newer libsane, but to backport it I need a newer debhelper-compat. Sigh.
23:10.08tsadokBeen there.  In fact, at one point I traced my "I need newer libraries" tree clean down to glibc, at which point I went "nope" and stuck with the version I had until upgrade.
23:11.51tsadokActually, that specific occasion might not have been on Debian/Devuan.  That might've been on FreeBSD 5, which I used for a bit before sarge came out.  Because woody was too ancient even for me.
23:11.58masontsadok: I think what I might do is just compile from source. Not a huge tree... It's pretty much just going to be xsane.
23:12.32tsadokOh, yes, if it's only ABI compat that's broken, compiling from source is the easy way.
23:12.47masonstow for the win
23:12.53tsadokYou don't start tracing down the need-newer-lib-version dependencies unless the API has changed.
23:13.38tsadokI think the occasion I'm thinking of, involved wanting to upgrade to the dev version of Inkscape, which used a dev version of Gtk, which used a dev version of glibc, or something like that.
23:14.03tsadokgtk2 vs 3, that sort of thing.
23:14.50tsadokOr it might've involved SDL; I'm not longer certain, it's been a few years.
23:15.02masonWow, this is aggressive: "fatal: not a git repository"
23:15.21lfhfsmithred: yes, it is a uefi system.
23:16.46masonAh, that was just the orig that Debian ships. Never mind. Anyway, I'll take this to -offtopic if I have further noise to emit.
23:16.59tsadokHmm, UEFI causes all sorts of boot-related weirdness, but you said that a FreeBSD live system boots, so presumably it's not the "We Have Locked Down The Things And Thou Shalt Not Leave Microsoft" issue.
23:18.08masonHeh, randomly, I have a couple boxes here Devuan boots but FreeBSD won't boot.
23:18.12tsadokCould be something related to device ID issues, but I am kind of out of my depth there.
23:18.36lfhmason: yeah, that's the more usual scenario.
23:18.38tsadokI have _tried_ to avoid UEFI, but that's getting hard to do these days.
23:19.15tsadokIf Devuan boots but FreeBSD doesn't, you can use LILO or grub to chainload BSD.
23:19.22tsadokNot sure about doing the reverse.
23:20.03lfhThe problem is in the initramfs or similar, so grub won't help here (I get to grub just fine)
23:20.04masontsadok: The bootloader comes up, but kernel load fails.
23:20.19tsadokAh.  Hmm.
23:21.29tsadokAre you using a separate /boot partition, or is it just part of the root fs?
23:21.45masontsadok: Installer, in my case. I don't get to where I've set up a system.
23:21.49lfhThe live media itself is what fails
23:21.56masonNice, very parallel.
23:22.00lfhheh
23:22.03tsadokAh.
23:22.04tsadokI see.
23:22.49tsadokWeird trick that might work:  take the HD out, plug it into different hardware, install Devuan, then put the HD back in the hardware you want to use.
23:23.15tsadokYou wouldn't *expect* this to work (unless you're an old BeOS user maybe), but these days it often does.
23:25.07masonI'd thought about doing just that in my case, but I just ran with Devuan instead.
23:25.18lfhyeah, I might not have a choice but to try.
23:25.51jonadabIt triggers my "this is icky" radar, but it has _worked_ the last two or three times I've had to try it.
