01:11.26XenguyHere's a hypothetical scenario:  You buy a new PC and decide, with glee, to overwrite W10, Cortana, and the gang, with Devuan (beowulf)!  You find it fun, but then comes the part about having to reinstall all the software that's already on your usual go-to PC...
01:12.19fsmithredthere are a few ways to deal with that
01:12.32XenguyThere used to be this old trick where you could do this on your existing/non-new PC:  dpkg --set-selections
01:12.36fsmithreddpkg get-selections/set-
01:12.38fsmithredyeah
01:12.53XenguyYeah, now this used to work cos I remember, long ago, doing it...
01:12.56fsmithredrefractasnapshot and installer
01:13.07fsmithredif you want exactly the same thing
01:13.19XenguyBut now dpkg coughs up an error, so I had to use messier methods to get my way
01:13.37fsmithredwhat error?
01:13.38XenguyOK, I was thinking you might say that
01:13.57fsmithredboot live and rsync the system over
01:14.03XenguyBut that is exactly the same thing, true
01:14.34XenguyCan I use refracta to rsync a sub-set?
01:14.58fsmithreda refracta iso? yeah, it has rsync and openssh-server installed and running
01:15.28fsmithredboot, mount, then connect from the old machine
01:15.48XenguyBTW, while I think of it, when I did the fresh beowulf install, I noticed there was no 'rsync' installed by default, and was a bit surprised, cos I use rsync so much
01:16.27fsmithredthat fact is how I got started making my own live isos
01:16.34XenguyI've been cheating and just schlepping data around by external drives
01:17.21fsmithredI don't take a desktop when I do a netinstall
01:17.30fsmithredjust standard system utils
01:17.42fsmithredthen add stuff after reboot
01:17.55fsmithredwithout recommends and mostly without metapackages
01:18.44XenguyBTW, what is the issue with recommends?  It seems to be turning up as an issue a lot lately...
01:19.05XenguyShouldn't recommends be suppressed by default?
01:19.16Xenguyi.e. opt-in, not opt-out
01:19.28gnarfacedefaults are set upstream
01:19.58gnarfaceit's easy to override
01:20.01XenguySo if I install something with apt-get, is it automatically pulling in recommends?
01:20.08gnarfaceunless you disable it, yes
01:20.15XenguyDamn, don't like that
01:20.30XenguySo is there a CLI option for disabling that?
01:20.35fsmithredyou can disable it per command...
01:20.39Xenguybingo
01:20.44gnarfacei think what Debian changed was how much stuff they're recommending, and the agenda for doing so
01:20.51fsmithred<PROTECTED>
01:21.01Xenguythanks folks
01:21.13fsmithredor aptitude -R install <package>
01:21.16XenguySame for apt-get I assume
01:21.21XenguyI don't use aptitude
01:21.31gnarfaceyes, apt-get also obeys --no-install-recommends
01:21.34fsmithredyeah, apt-get is like apt. Only the long form
01:21.36Xenguyyay
01:21.41fsmithredone more...
01:21.53*** join/#devuan blizzow (~blizzow@71-33-151-125.hlrn.qwest.net)
01:22.07fsmithred$ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00norecommends
01:22.07fsmithredAPT::Install-Recommends "no";
01:22.19gnarfaceyea, here's how you make it permanent ^
01:22.34fsmithredI wish there was --with-recommends
01:22.37XenguyThat's the ticket then, thanks again.
01:22.46XenguyIt should be opt-in, yes, definitely
01:22.58XenguyWe should be aiming for less bloat, not more bloat
01:23.00gnarfaceas for the --get-selections/--set-selections thing, i can only suggest check the actual error.  i vaguely remember having to strip that list of extraneous markers before feeding it back in
01:23.33fsmithredyeah, you get-selections, then you wipe all the selections, then you set them
01:23.34XenguyWhen you did the 'set', it used to just do as it was told...
01:23.37gnarfaceyou also have to run some other command afterwards to get the changes to "take" but i always forget what it is
01:23.58fsmithredand you get a half-paragraph warning in the middle when the package system is about to be blanked
01:23.58XenguyBut this time, it was like the 'database' didn't accept the new 'set' instructions'
01:24.18fsmithredI wrote a script to do this automatically a long time ago
01:24.26fsmithrednot sure if it still works
01:24.28XenguyI'll research it further, cos it was a good trick, and seemed to work fine, mostly

12:09.44DivanSantanaI do run devuan on my server and a few systems at home. But am considering it for enterprise in light of centos accouncement and direction.  Though majority of other projects are still not thinking about devuan and primarily support debian and ubuntu which is unfortunate.  Would be nice if that changed.
