06:07.18golinuxThat was a philosophical comment not a technical one.
06:07.39Juesto...
06:08.17golinuxI don't think you can install gnome 3 on devuan and still have devuan.  Mate is OK.
06:08.48golinuxCurrent gnome is too tied to systemd
06:09.25Juestowhy packages are still provided then
06:09.32Juestowhy recent packages*
06:10.07Juestoi find this breakage kind of unacceptable
06:11.36golinuxBecause devuan mirrors the Debian repos and the gnome hairball isn't a priority
06:12.12Juestoif its broken, why not remove it entirely?
06:13.16golinuxBecause parts of gnome aren't a problem.  I use some myself.

09:02.15edbarx<< ip a | grep "State UP" >> gives unreliable results if one wants to unload any daemon attached to a crashed or unsuccessful connection. I will use << pgrep dhclient | grep wlan >> which should tell whether any daemons are flying around suspciously.
09:05.05muepthat sounds like it would only catch dhclient processes
09:19.42edbarxIt will catch dhclient processes that are attached to the network interface being used, which is crucial if one wants to do proper cleanup. Otherwise dangling daemons may remain unload which is bad.

09:22.22TorCI'm looking through the forum and log, but while I'm doing that, does anyone know if sleep and/or hibernate on laptops are just plain broken in Devuan?
09:22.36muepI would prefer having programs track the child processes they start and clean them up in a more robust way than "the name of this looks like it was started by me"
09:38.16TorCWell, I'm not finding it so quickly as I thought I might, but I'm not entirely surprised.  I've got a (new) Think Penguin Galapagos, and I've been getting the reboot after (apparently working) suspend via pm-suspend.
09:40.19TorCApparently it should be possible, the question is how much work will it be in Devuan.  It was working in the stock Parabola.
09:41.19TorCThis is a fresh and updated netinstall of Devuan, from Beta2.
09:42.22mueprtdid you try it with some other distro?
09:42.53muepah, you did
09:43.27edbarxIt is not the 'name of this looks like it was started by me' but it the fact that it is managing the same network interface and also it is the same program I started. Well, what you say makes sense: that is my aim, but give evolution its due time.
09:49.22TorCmuep, yes I did.  Actually, I thought of trying another distro when I was having trouble, then realized I already had.

10:39.58TorCXenguy: I've just realized that the stock Devuan kernel is pretty old.  I'm thinking the next try is to enable backports, or at least steal the kernel from there.

13:31.52edbarxIt all depends on what the wpa_supplicant daemon does.

22:16.48fsmithredif you use backports, you should put a file in /etc/apt/preferences.d/ that contains
22:16.51fsmithredPackage: *
22:16.51fsmithredPin: release a=jessie-backports
22:16.51fsmithredPin-Priority: 100

22:17.45underd0ghow do I call the file ?
22:17.51TorCgolinux: I tried that pin-priority last night on my new install, but when I pulled in the newer kernel to fix suspend, X was broken on reboot.  I gave up, removed the pin, updated, and all was working.
22:17.57fsmithredyou could call it backports

22:18.52Juestounderd0g: apt_preferences != sources.list

22:19.11golinuxActually that's not right it's in the devuan repos.
22:19.11Juestoplease read man apt_preferences

22:19.53Juestojust use the priority
22:20.04Juestoso you avoid an breaking upgrade
22:20.05underd0gI just need ffmpeg
22:20.19TorCBefore adding the pin, apt wanted to update ~140 packages, adding it stopped that, and I was able to go to linux-image and update just that.
22:20.21Juestounderd0g: use the priority then and get ffmpeg, no need to remove after
22:20.38fsmithredoh, I see there's no ffmpeg in jessie

22:23.04underd0gI just want to reencode some mp4 to mp3
22:23.06TorCWhen X was broken, I figured the kernel had some dependency in BP missing that I was too tired to troubleshoot, which is why I gave up and just took in backports.
22:23.36TorCThat worked, at least as far as getting a system behaving decently.

22:25.42TorCKatolaZ: If you have the script, I would appreciate the convenience of a known good starting point to work with.
22:26.34underd0gI found an article , it had somem quirks , but I managed to get it done
22:26.45fsmithredecho "$1" > /sys/blah-blah/backlight
22:27.12fsmithredcall the script with the number you want as the first and only argument
22:27.23underd0gI installed it ina a VM , later copied it to a USB
22:27.41underd0gnow I have my devuan with me at all times
22:27.52fsmithredcool
22:28.28fsmithredI have mine with me most of the time, too, but on a live-usb with persistence
22:28.43underd0gthis is a full install
22:28.54fsmithredyeah, you can do upgrades easily
22:29.04underd0gI have another USB with katana
22:29.20underd0gon it I have virtual box portable
22:29.38fsmithredvb-portable??
22:29.40underd0gso I can run my devuan at work on a win machine
22:29.49underd0gyeah , cool thing
22:30.03fsmithredrunning it inside vb on windows?
22:30.10underd0gyup

22:31.13underd0gand I kinda don't want to carry my laptop arround
22:31.55underd0gplus , I feel uber-geek running my OS from two usb's simultaneously
22:32.09fsmithredlol
22:32.41underd0gyou got devuan with usb persistence ? based on your live distro ?
22:32.55fsmithredyeah, I make lots of live-usbs
22:33.10underd0gI don't feel that uber-geek anymore
22:33.12underd0g:D
22:33.22fsmithredI don't think I have any pure devuan with persistence, but several versions of refracta on usb with persistence
22:33.35fsmithredand one usb with grub bootloader
22:33.45fsmithredand refracta/wheezy
22:34.25underd0gwell you can't have pure devuan , since you're the only one (as far as I know) with live distro
22:34.29fsmithredyou have encrypted /boot. That's pretty cool.
22:35.08fsmithredthe unofficial live devuan that I made is pure devuan except for my two scripts

22:36.07underd0gwell , the downside of my copying from a VM is that now I have half of the stick unformatted
22:36.33underd0gbut I've got lvm , so I'll just expand it
22:36.39fsmithredis the half you're using in a normal partition?
22:36.43fsmithredoh yeah, lvm
22:37.07underd0gI just need to remember how LVM is expanded
22:37.21underd0gyou know I'm a sucker for LVM , fsmithred
22:37.22fsmithredor push the linux partition back and put a fat32 in front of it so you can use it to transfer files to windows
22:37.37underd0gI don't use winblows
22:37.38fsmithredexpand the container before you expand the filesystem
22:37.55underd0gnope, you cant expand LVM
22:38.21fsmithredpretty sure I've done it
22:38.26underd0gyou need new container , and then you add it to the group
22:38.36fsmithredoh, ok
22:38.48underd0gon encrypted lvm it don't work oter way
22:38.54underd0gother*
22:39.11underd0gI didn't have any unencrypted ones
22:40.06fsmithredgo for a third usb and make raid
22:40.18underd0gbut I do remember that somebody at 2600 facebook once asked about that ,  and I researched and came to understand that you can't expand fs or container
22:40.41underd0gso I patched up a procedure for him to expand lvm
22:40.44fsmithredman pvresize
22:41.00underd0ghah, now I remebered , I have it in my fb inbox
22:41.14underd0gas I lay'd it out for him
