17:58.09blast007spldart: that board you linked on #bzflag doesn't have two full speed x16 slots.  One of them is only x8
17:59.21spldartI noticed that.. But I don't wanna sli anywho
17:59.55spldartI'll prolly start by using the on board 8 series geforce and later get one high end card for the fast slot.
18:00.08spldartIf that's viable
18:02.48blast007"When 2 PCI Express x16 slots are all installed, the PCIE x 16 lanes will auto arrange form x16/ x0 to x8/ x8. Do not use the light-blue slot when only one PCI Express x16 card is installed."
18:06.18blast007looks like it might have an 8400/8500
18:06.36blast007unless they're talking about an add-on card
18:06.48blast007they aren't overly clear
18:07.05spldartSo.. if I later add a higher end pcie card. I don't want to have any card of any kinds in the slower pcie slot?
18:07.18spldartI have NO pcie experience whatsoever.
18:07.36spldartI'm very stuck in the 4 to 6 y/o era on pc's
18:07.41blast007if you ever want to run SLI, it will run both cards at half the bandwidth
18:07.58blast007because it's a cheap board ;)
18:07.58spldartOk.. Well. I'm never running sli
18:08.13spldartyup
18:08.14spldartthat's me
18:08.16spldartcheap
18:08.21spldart;)
18:08.55spldartCould I potentially run a nice raid card in the slower pcie slot without effecting the faster pcie slot?
18:09.02spldartor is that even possible
18:12.51blast007the PCI x1 slot? sure
18:17.10spldartSounds like the cheap set for me :)
18:17.35spldartCase http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147118
18:17.36blast007the board does have onboard RAID though
18:17.48blast007what kind of CPU are you looking at? A Phenom x4?

18:18.44blast007oh yeah, forgot it had a combo
18:18.54spldartI have a couple sata 250 gig drives laying around that will prolly go in
18:19.19spldartand my optical drive to start with will be ide which I believe the mobo has a single ide connector so that should work out.
18:19.33blast007yeah
18:19.49spldartSo new everything except drives.
18:19.52blast007I upgraded my optical to SATA just recently
18:19.55spldarts/new/knew
18:20.05blast007so my only IDE drive in the system is the 750GB drive
18:21.01spldarthrm... I wonder how fast my OS's would be on a sata raid 0 utilizing the on board raid abilities.
18:22.30spldartThis machine is replacing my old dually which is failing and a small baby atx that I'm on now. so I have 2 250gig sata's... one ide 300 gig and one ide 500 gig HDD and one dvd burner and one dvd rom cd burner which will prolly be handed to someone else in house
18:23.04blast007this one here is kinda interesting too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188036
18:23.29spldartconsiders putting the 500 gig and dvd burner on the same ide chain..
18:23.35spldartis checking your link
18:23.45blast007cheaper than your board too ;)
18:24.46spldartNot if you consider the combo price
18:24.48blast007oh, slower RAM though
18:25.20spldartwell... close..
18:25.32blast007still $10 cheaper, after rebate
18:26.11spldartdon'[t like evga. bought a card from them once and am unimpressed with durability.. I'd like to stick to asus, msi, giga cuz I trust those name with first hand experience
18:27.23spldartThanks for the feedback :-D I'm a bit lost right now. Another reason to keep the purchase small... so mistakes are less costly
18:28.00blast007hmm, I've had several cards from eVGA ;)
18:28.21spldartYou've had good luck?
18:28.28spldartI've had artifacting in no time
18:28.40blast0077900 GTO, 9800 GTX+, and I think even my 5200 was eVGA
18:28.44spldartis not the happiest camper with thems guys
18:28.52blast007do you overclock them?
18:28.56spldartnope
18:28.59blast007huh
18:29.38blast007which card did you have?
18:29.54spldartI wont buy ati any more.. I used to swear by them back in the day but my 9200, 9600 and 9800 all failed in just a bit over a year. And I spent to much on them to have that short a life.. My 7500 and 8500 lasted way longer.
18:30.01spldart6200 a-le
18:30.08spldartjust a bare bones card
18:31.23spldartI have nvidia geforce cards goin back to geforce 2 and 440mx that I bought further back than the 9600 and 9800 which died years ago... the old geforces are still goin.
18:31.26*** join/#bzflag-chat Abominable (i=Abominab@user-0ce2hpi.cable.mindspring.com)
18:32.30blast007heh, the OEM CPU is only $5 cheaper than retail
18:33.24blast007seems like almost all of the combos for the retail one is a RAID card though ;)
18:33.27spldartNot to worried about that.. I hate factory coolers. I always end up adding some semi pricey aftermarket one.
18:35.04blast007hehe
18:35.06spldartBy all means.. If you see more bang for the buck and the buck is not much higher at all I will readjust.. I've just got my shopping cart sitting open... prolly will for a few more hours to allow anyone who has some educated advice to contribute their two cents of knowledge.
18:37.43spldartIB someone chastizes me for not goin intel
18:38.07blast007was gonna
18:38.10blast007;)
18:38.18spldartheh
18:38.20spldart:)
18:38.24blast007but anyway, overall looks like an okay machine for the price
18:39.04spldartlooks forward to seeing 4 cpu's in his OS's
18:39.09blast007;)
18:39.36blast007that CPU will probably outperform mine in some stuff
18:39.42blast007I have a faster core, but only two of them
18:39.49blast007(3GHz Core 2 Duo)
18:39.52spldartAh. Intel?
18:39.53spldartAh
18:40.12blast007there's already some games that can eat up both my cores
18:40.20blast007multithreading ftw!
18:40.33spldartI'm hoping I can have 4+ encoding processes goin on at once and see awesome performance
18:40.41spldartindeed.
18:40.42blast007I don't really have any games that I *can't* play on my box
18:40.58spldartI rarely play anything but bzflag.
18:41.14spldartA tiny bit of halo. used to to UT.
18:41.16blast007but now that you're getting a real computer, you should try some other games  ;)

18:44.15blast007http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130376
18:44.20blast007not a bad price either
18:44.31blast007that's the one I had, and I paid a little over $200 iirc

18:45.46blast007it's a bit tight in my case, at least with the PCIe cords
18:45.47spldartAck! it's that, gasp, 9800 number
18:46.09blast007what PSU you getting?
18:46.26spldartthe case link up there... It has a 500 watt psu in it...
18:46.43blast007ah
18:47.11spldartIt had good reviews
18:47.41blast007I don't trust PSUs that come with cheap cases  :P
18:47.42spldartI was gonna go Antec and whateva bare case. Decided that this one was good price and the review were good.
18:48.17blast007let me find you what I had for a PSU
18:48.20blast007have*
18:49.08blast007http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
18:49.23blast007I've love that PSU
18:50.30blast007it has a single +12V rail, so I didn't have to think as hard when balancing out what cords went where
18:50.40blast007and I didn't have to question if it would have enough power for my video card
18:51.21blast007and it had good reviews
18:52.04blast007(I don't always trust newegg reviews either... I went on some sites that actually did efficiency tests and whatnot on the PSU, who actually knew what they were talking about)
18:54.29blast007a cheap PSU can fry the whole system..
18:54.47me1blast007, loving the review for that 9800 'newegg/evga sent me a card that was clearly an original gtx, with the + sign taped on it, not the 55nm as claimed in ads.'
18:55.22blast007heh
18:55.34blast007kinda reminds me of my 7900 GTO
18:55.45blast007the box had a "GTO" sticker put over the "GTX"  ;)
18:55.59blast007cuz basically it *was* a GTX, just with slower memory settings
18:56.31me1hehe
18:57.13blast007they had GTX cards where the memory didn't perform to specs, and they didn't want to waste the cards ;)
18:57.49spldartback
18:58.22blast007spldart: this was my board, not that it really matters, since I have an Intel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131335
18:58.25spldartthat powersupply is WAY outside my price range
18:59.07blast007meh, I usually won't spend any less than $80 on a good PSU
18:59.21blast007think the two I've put into my gaming box have been > $100
18:59.25spldartNow that's the price my antec truepower 430 cost.. or was it a 480
18:59.53spldartI've been known to get into a power supply and upgrade it. I have no problem opening a brand new one from roswill and making sure I'm happy with the design

19:32.25blast007(and lots of the video cards now need two PCIe power cords, and some need 8-pin cables now, but you can worry about that when you decide to upgrade the card)
