13:32.21 | muks | folks, i want to give some feedback on SIP (client) usage experience.. i have continually used software SIP clients since about 2012 for office meetings. apart from SIP issues, i've almost always faced media issues with voice breaking.. crackling, etc. i've used csipsimple (in the past), linphone, baresip (lately), and changing software versions have also affected call quality. |
13:33.59 | muks | i've never felt it to function at the same level as a regular phone (some of this may be due to jitter, use of wifi, etc.). sometime it worked well, sometimes it worked terribly. |
13:36.31 | muks | last week i got a physical SIP desk phone, and the experience is far removed from the past. there has been no cracking, no delays and echo, no drops.. it feels just like a regular phone call. the original purpose of getting a desk SIP phone was to have an always-on phone (as the mobile OS's battery saver was killing the linphone app on my smartphone) |
13:38.38 | muks | i actually tried hard to cause problems (by starting other traffic flows utilizing the same uplink, etc.) but it's held up solidly.. i don't know what is the devil in the details and why software phone apps have such trouble. |
13:39.15 | muks | inside, the hardware desk SIP phone is a linux computer running software |
13:44.02 | muks | i wouldn't be typing all this - i am surprised at the consistency with which the desk phone works without media quality problems |
