15:27.07jelly-home($99, i.MX6, 2x gigabit eth, 5x usb, orders start next month)
15:29.23traeakhmm
15:29.28traeakwhat gpu part is that?
15:31.09traeakhonestly I see this as an almost perfect router
15:31.47traeaksuper multitask router
15:33.11traeakdoesthe mx6 natively support those gigabit ports?
15:33.31arokux2you can have a router for $40
15:34.30traeakwhat kind of router?
15:34.55traeaki have an asus rtn6 sitting here and it's definitely underpowered for what i need
15:35.01arokux2sorry, 50, with 1 usb port
15:35.10traeakrtn16
15:35.21arokux2TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND
15:36.01traeaki stuck an ftp server on the asus rtn16 and it only sustains about 2-3MB/s on gigabit
15:36.10arokux2was thinking of buying it, flashing with open-wrt and attaching a hard drive to it
15:37.56traeakchecking if it even has support for dd-wrt or whatever
15:37.58*** join/#arm-netbook gimli (~gimli@xbmc/staff/gimli)
15:38.04traeaki have a drive attached to my rtn16 at the moment
15:38.26jelly-homearokux2: a wr842nd runs openwrt well and deals with usb storage and usb 3g modem; I don't need gigabit for it but I'm not sure the SoC in WR1043ND would be good enough to read from disk and push gigabit speeds out at the same time
15:38.27arokux2traeak, strange, yours have better specs in terms of cpu/ram
15:39.02arokux2traeak, so strange it is so slow
15:40.25arokux2jelly-home, you need gigabit speeds? :) my internet connection is 25Mbps, so I do not need them
15:41.39traeakarokux2: because i have full gigabit pipe into here, i was making it double up for duties other than router
15:41.41jelly-homearokux2: it need it for local traffic, but not for outbound or inbound to them internets
15:41.49arokux2TL-WR1043ND should be >= wr842nd
15:41.59traeakbasically this is at work, so demands are more than a typicaly home router
15:42.03jelly-homeyes, but not by much
15:42.09traeakoh the killer
15:42.20traeakis transferring data *from* the router to the internal network
15:42.22arokux2ok, home usage in my case only
15:42.25traeakit can't sustain any throughput
15:44.25arokux2but now that you are speeaking of it... why not add 50$ and buy a device where normal linux disto could be installed.. without the need to fiddle with openwrt and the like?!
15:46.34jelly-homebecause $50 != $0

15:47.14traeakyou mean something like this:  http://www.gizmag.com/utilite-mini-computer/28312/
15:47.19traeakthat someone posted :-p
15:48.15arokux2http://utilite-computer.com/web/utilite-specifications it will be in different modifications?
15:49.09traeaki have no big reason to push for something like this, just thought it interesting that the utilite mini would make a great super router
15:49.19traeakthe dual gigabit as long as they are real gigabit
15:50.27arokux2jelly-home, does the power of the usb port of the router suffice for the external usb drive?
15:51.12jelly-homearokux2: no idea, I tried a 16GB usb stick not a HDD
15:51.17traeaki currently have a wall warted older usb external hooked up to the router i have here
15:51.58traeakalthough i did have a usb3 toshiba bus powered drive on there for a little bit
15:51.58traeakhmm
15:52.07traeakusb3, what grief
15:54.04arokux2i was just thinking of having one device for all my basic needs
15:54.10arokux2with one AC adapter
15:54.47arokux2a router with usb port seemed to be a solution. since after installing openwrt I can turn it into micro server

16:09.07rmbetter separate things
16:09.07rminto 2 devices
16:09.11rma router and a server
16:15.54traeakrm: depends on your needs, sometimes having too many machines sucks.  I treat my router like a DMZ dealy.  To access from outside or from inside both requires ssh for direct access
16:16.05traeaki think i have external ssh disabled
16:17.41rmI mean that trying to fit anything beyond basic router into the limited RAM, CPU, and most importantly the neutered "embedded" OpenWRT software
16:17.57rmis a certain way to great grief and sorrow :)
16:18.39rmand the other way round, trying to route/firewall stuff on a server that also stores sensitive data, is not always optimal (although this *can* be done correctly)
16:18.54traeakthe router distros are pretty limited on what they can do.  i have tomato on the asus, its set up to put external ftp accessible storage on it
16:19.14traeakso its sort of a private "drop box" is all this one does
16:20.55traeakit might be nice to leverage the static IP address to do stuff like drop software releases on it for customers, etc. been using hostmonster for that though
16:21.25traeakanywaysa not much to do with hardware though
16:22.26rmI prefer to put an MK802 next to the router
16:22.33rmand it runs real Debian and has 1 GB of RAM
16:22.42rmanything remotely complex goes there
16:22.47rmrouter = only routing
