02:51.49MonetAs much as I love mah Anno, time did certainly fly.
02:54.38MonetOne of my NPC opponents was this guy who constantly reminded me that I was inferior in power and position to him
02:55.11MonetBuut he roamed the map with this gigantic fleet and his war with another NPC gave me land so who am I to argue?

15:06.22TreebeardHello
15:06.40TreebeardWormy_ Ghelae: Would the properties of a multiple star system ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_system ) create difficulties for a spacefaring nation such as the Talven Empire attempting to construct Dyson spheres?
15:07.26XhoHi
15:07.30XhoMan I'm bored
15:07.35GhelaeHello.
15:07.52GhelaeTreebeard: Do you mean, for example, would a binary star system be difficult to construct a dyson sphere in?
15:08.58GhelaeIf the stars are somewhat close to each other, yes; a dyson sphere only really works if each element of it can neatly orbit a star, but if it has two stars on either side, they're going to pull it all over the place.
15:09.04TreebeardYes, though I was thinking more in terms of triple or quadruple star systems
15:09.19GhelaeIt's the same principle.
15:10.16TreebeardAlright, thanks
15:10.27GhelaeIf they're fairly far away from each other - maybe a few dozen AU; I'm not sure, and it would depend on the star - the gravitational pull of one star on an element ~1 AU from the other will be small enough to not make too big a problem. Just something you'd have to correct with thrusters every so often.
15:11.17GhelaeIf they're really close, however - say, <<1 AU - you can have a dyson sphere that orbits both/all of the stars as though they're a single object, again with only course corrections being required to compensate for the fact that the gravitational field isn't actually spherically symmetric.

22:28.39TreebeardHello
22:28.43Wormy_Regarding infectious cancer of canine venereal sarcoma, "Although descended from dogs, it is genetically different from dogs, with a different chromosome number (57 rather than 78), due to extensive chromosomal rearrangements. Since it cannot, as far as we know, exchange genetic material with dogs, it is a new species. ...
22:28.57Wormy_Although its phenotype differs considerably from dogs (no brain, no bones, no eyes, no fur, asexual) classification by descent clearly implies that it is a canid and mammal – certainly the most unusual mammal ever discovered. " https://westhunt.wordpress.com/2015/04/09/cell-line-infections-or-my-dog-has-no-bones/

22:43.29Wormy_and genotype for that matter
22:45.37DrodoEmpireHoly shit
22:48.08DrodoEmpireSo its a cancer, that becomes a parasite, that becomes its own organism? o.O

23:07.05Wormy_That's the implication.  Of course we're in the grey areas of taxonomic classification, so caution is required.
23:10.26Wormy_I think the argument's pretty strong its an independent organism; the cancer has a reshuffled chromosomes, and has dropped many like other parasitic organisms, reproduces and metabolises.  To what extent it is a mammal, well its descended from dogs, but hasn't got some mammalian phenotype going for it
23:10.42Wormy_*hasn't got much
23:12.20Wormy_But then, whirling disease is still a cnidarian
23:12.47Wormy_the other organism, not to confuse potentially
23:13.22Wormy_So I could live with "highly parasitic mammal"
23:14.52DrodoEmpireAhh.
23:17.07Wormy_There was a man who had the misfortune to get cancer from a tape worm, and die from it.
