00:31.10Wormy_hi
00:32.41DrodoEmpireHello!
00:38.37The_RandomnessHey
01:17.04DrodoEmpiretest
01:25.12The_RandomnessWormy_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCiuMomjVx0
01:31.50Wormy_Eh, it doesn't really debunk the Ship of Theseus paradox applied to the human body.  Just makes it more complicated, i.e. some cells live longer than others.  However, the ship of Theseus paradox also applies to the human cells, for many of them too require constant replenishment of certain sugars and other biomolecules.
01:33.57Wormy_But with cells, I suppose some proteins and fats change while other types of molecule like DNA do not
01:36.16The_Randomnessright, but I'm personally of the opinion that the Ship of Theseus thing is not very useful to think about
01:37.42The_RandomnessIt's difficult to put into words what I think about it
01:41.12Wormy_Well, the important thing to take away from it in my opinion, is that our identity isn't a binary thing.  Its spread out over time due to biological processes like metabolism and cell renewal, and built up of information stored in our genes.
01:41.41The_RandomnessWell, it isn't a static thing, like, for example, my personality and opinions and such have very clearly changed over time
01:42.02The_RandomnessBut people still consider me to be, well, me.
01:42.09Wormy_I'd argue because that, I'm still the same person I was 7 years ago, although not exactly the same person.  On the emergent scale of things, none of that inner complexity changes much facts about my identity or self, or awareness of self
01:42.39The_RandomnessI also dislike the Ship of Theseus paradox because it seems to imply some sort of Platonic version of an object or person
01:42.58Wormy_But maybe in 50 years if I am still alive, I will have changed enough for me to recognise
01:43.47Wormy_I don't think there are platonic forms, but there are abstractions.
01:44.07The_Randomnessyeah, I don't think so either, and could you expand a bit on what you mean by that?
01:46.06Wormy_Well Douglas Hofstadter considered a computer made out of toppling dominoes
01:47.43Wormy_It is presented with the input of 641, which is a prime number
01:48.46Wormy_Once set in motion, the last domino not to fall will be the 641'st dominoi (I'm not including the explaination, why involving loops, too late for that)
01:49.47Wormy_However, the only explanation is simply that it is because 641 is a prime, and not due the lower level explanation
01:52.58Wormy_Its taken me a long time to accept that abstractions and emergent physical laws exist, but it can be understood under a reductionist framework
01:53.19The_RandomnessI don't quite get what you're saying with the example you provided
01:53.37Wormy_Could you explain which bit?
01:54.00The_Randomness"However, the only explanation is simply that it is because 641 is a prime, and not due the lower level explanation"
01:55.17Wormy_Right well, trying to understand the final state of the domino computer from the motions of all the atoms in the dominoes will not yield the explanation.
01:55.37The_RandomnessRight
01:56.03Wormy_Not only is it unpredictable, but also doesn't include any notion of primality.  Or indeed loops or switches, which the computer is made from
01:56.30Wormy_Though it doesn't matter whether its dominoes or something else emulating that program
01:58.13Wormy_Though that's not to say lower level physics is irrelevant.
01:58.17The_RandomnessRight
01:58.39The_RandomnessOk, now I see why you used it as an example of abstraction, although it wasn't clear at first to me
02:00.38Wormy_I suppose the physical world is like a window on abstractions.  Computers imperfectly instantiate Turing machines.  And sometimes abstractions are like "perfect" models of physical phenomena.  But its better to think of them as not seperate, and only relevant to processes of channge
02:00.56Wormy_Unlike Plato's ideal forms which are changeless and  non-physical
02:01.02The_RandomnessRight
02:05.45Wormy_I So I guess its like saying, at a high level of explanation, we can conjecture that ships exist and have certain simplified properties that ignore complex details.
02:06.42The_RandomnessOk
02:10.12Wormy_That seems rather pedantic, but it is contrast to the strongest forms of reductionism
02:14.18The_RandomnessRight
02:14.46Wormy_And I just had a thought that might solve something has bothered me before
02:14.59Wormy_Not really sure how to express it
02:17.28Wormy_You can construct a phase space or evolutionary landscape of all possible processes, whether that be a landscape of evolutionary fitness, or possible identities that must be enormous, or a phase space of molecular species taken up by organic molecules (which is tremendous, oyr universe hasn't created all possible cominations and never will)
02:18.13Wormy_But that all sounds rather platonic, and its like saying "everything exists" whether or not its physically there
02:19.20Wormy_But lets consider the ship of theseus
02:19.50Wormy_We've found we can describe it multiple ways, but not the whole entity at any particular level
02:29.08The_RandomnessOk
02:30.06Wormy_That, I might be wrong, could be used to argue that you can't extract a platonic form out of it
02:35.47Wormy_goodnight

11:46.50HachimanHi
11:52.04Wormy_hi and hello
11:52.29MonetHello
11:53.36MonetSaw Warcraft last night
11:54.49HachimanWas it good?
11:55.03MonetIf you're a fan of the franchise, yes
11:55.22MonetIts got one or two deviations from history but I wasn't too bothered
11:55.31HachimanOkay, question; if I went into the Warcraft movie with no knowledge or experience with the game franchise, would I understand what is going on?
11:57.21HachimanAnd would it be able to stand on its own as a movie without relying on the games?
12:02.18MonetI went with a friend who knew nothing about Warcraft and she liked it
12:02.36MonetSo I'd say yes
12:03.16MonetThe only big question I can see you might encounter is "What is so special about The Guardian"
12:06.17HachimanFair enough
12:07.04Wormy_This gives me hope the Assassin's Creed movie won't be totally bad.
12:10.52MonetChris Metzen was executive producer so I think that helped
12:11.49Wormy_Hm, I just had an awesome idea, but I doubt it could really work
12:12.12MonetShoot
12:12.44Wormy_Games are becoming more and more lifelike.  Studies on heavy gamers show that their brains respond and learn much like people with real careers, even for things like flying aircraft
12:13.13Wormy_Plus one day soon immersive virtual reality will become commercially viable
12:14.13Wormy_Of course the physics of games don't always the realism of reality, but what if immersive games end up training a breed of super athletic gamers that can enact some of it in the real world?
12:15.20Wormy_By immersive VR I mean sight, sound, touch, motion, possibly taste and smell
12:15.30MonetThat's one of the things I'm investigating in my dissertation
12:17.27Wormy_Exciting, I would like to hear what you find

12:24.17MonetWe've seen their trailers after all
12:24.29Wormy_Though since they would spend most of the waking hours in cyberspace, they might not be very active in the real world or very compliant on enlisting.

12:29.59ImperiosNow, the movie was highly atmospheric and actually did a fairly good job at introducing a universe, not to mention the CGI and action
12:30.13Wormy_I may watch this film.
12:30.14ImperiosBut at the same time I oppose the clunky storytelling
12:30.46ImperiosAlthough I like that they avoided too much exposition, it feels very dynamic but to those who do not know the universe may also feel confusing
12:30.53ImperiosAs almost nothing is explained directly

15:45.53CyrannianHai
15:45.55Wormy_I've read that before, that stars come in all colours but we lack the sensitivity.  However this one I'm reading states that stars follow the Planck Body Curve and only deviate a little due to their chemical abundances.
15:46.19Wormy_That curve isn't like the rainbow
15:47.03MonetHello
15:47.09Wormy_However, what it means is that there could be a few stars that are violet, indigo or green that have unusual chemistry
15:47.43Wormy_So there are greenish-yellow stars, but only so slightly
15:48.42Wormy_Hm, I also read that it is possible to see stars in all colours due to optical illusions.  Especially binaries, which can appear green or pink even.  An exception is Beta Pictoris, which is a single star that some people see as green.
15:49.55Wormy_Most stars follow that black line https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/ba/PlanckianLocus.png
15:50.16Wormy_And are close to black bodies

17:29.00AdmiralPandaso yeah, Stellaris in general had a bit of a steep learning curve, like I got massively fucked in my first game and I had no idea why until I had a look at some third party guides, despite there being an in-game tutorial

18:02.06ImperiosHachiman: I've seen people reason that, in the Western world at least, "whiteness" is seen as exclusive, rather than inclusive, hence its racist connotations
18:02.08XhoI saw that
18:02.10Xhotwas savage
18:02.33ImperiosEssentially, whiteness is the lack of impurities left by other races, rather than just having European heritage
18:02.44ImperiosBarack Obama, for example, is black
18:03.54ImperiosNow I have reasons not to agree, because many racial and ethnic communities are by definition exclusive, but this is a valid point
18:04.19ImperiosBut that I believe depends on where you were born
18:04.39ImperiosViewed through Americanocentrist lens, I believe, white pride can be interpeted as racist
18:04.52ImperiosBecause one drop and all that
18:04.56MonetWhite Pride puts more focus on attacking non-whites.
18:05.33ImperiosAlso that
18:05.51Imperios"White pride" wouldn't be racist, if one lived in a mostly non-white community
18:06.14ImperiosLike Afrikaners I believe have a right to maintain their community and culture so as not to be subsumed by black South Africans
18:06.20ImperiosEven though apartheid and all that
18:10.46AdmiralPandathe real problem is that it implies that a white person being proud of their race is automatically racist, even if they're proud of it for the same reason a black or asian man is
18:11.35ImperiosTrue that
18:11.36HachimanAye
18:11.47HachimanAlso, I still wanna run / play Numenera at some point
18:12.01AdmiralPandaif you want to run it I want to play it :P
18:12.47AdmiralPandahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urGJ82UUex0 unrelated, but glorious
18:13.23Hachimanalroight luv, cahm down
18:13.36ImperiosAdmiralPanda: I think - or rather other people think and I am not sure about it - it's about definition
18:13.57CyrannianAny person being proud of something they have zero control over is bleh
18:14.08ImperiosThat's my opinion
18:14.22ImperiosBut the SJW PoV is kind of interesting
18:14.36ImperiosLike, would people believing in "black pride" and 'white pride' identify as white or black? Most likely, the latter
18:15.10ImperiosThus black is ultimately defined, in the West at least, as "having any significant amount of sub-Saharan African heritage", whereas white is defined as "having no non-European heritage"
18:16.36ImperiosI am not sure if that's logical but... eh...
18:16.39ImperiosWhat do you think?
18:17.30The_RandomnessI think what you're saying is absurd, white pride is an inherently racist phenomenon that places oneself over others simply due to ethnicity
18:17.51The_Randomnessor skin color
18:18.28Imperiosthe question is about black pride and Asian pride
18:18.30CyrannianAbout that picture of the different forms of pride, notice how "black supremacy" isn't highlighted, while the wikipedia page on Asian pride includes a paragraph about how it is used by different gangs, but that's cropped out
18:19.04ImperiosThe reasons, if there be any, that white pride is more racist than black pride or Asian pride
18:20.33The_RandomnessGenerally it's directly linked to white supremacy, which, well, doesn't need any further explanation
18:20.37HachimanI kind of regret bringing this pic up
18:21.46The_RandomnessI wasn't aware of (ethnicity) pride before this, but I don't have anything to say about those since I don't know anything about them
18:21.59ImperiosNo don't, it is an interesting topic
18:23.57ImperiosSpeaking of which, I should probably reaffirm my racial pride in the most Asian way possible
18:24.00ImperiosBy studying
18:24.11MonetBeing proud of what you're born with is a form of tribalism really.

18:25.20CourseworkiosMonet: But we're tribal animals
18:25.51CourseworkiosWe're still apes in our heart, meaning to protect and empower one's genotype and tribe
18:25.52Wormy_I suppose these sorts of discussions often lose social and historical context.  A lot of pride movements from oppressed minorities in society are about empowerment.  Which I'm totally fine with.  But there is of course supremacists as well,  and the line will always be blurred.  But you see, White Pride is different both in stance and context, what could it possibly be otherwise?
18:26.40Wormy_When the majority often has more advantages
18:27.05CourseworkiosWhich brings us another question
18:27.08Courseworkios*to
18:27.55CourseworkiosWould it be acceptable, for example, for a white community living in a non-white culture - say, Europeans in China or the white Afrikaners - to affirm their white pride?
18:28.11XhoI hate to say it but I think humans are far more simple than they think they are
18:28.12Cyrannianaye, I would imagine that Black and Asian pride both emerged in the America in response to institutionalised racism (and in society in general), while White people have no comparable history to justify seeking empowerment
18:28.17Cyrannian*in response to Wormy
18:28.54Wormy_However, there are far too many who consider Western ideals and liking Western way of life as "white privilidge" or colonialism, which I don't really get
18:29.44The_Randomnessyeah, that's pretty silly
18:29.44Wormy_Courseworkios:  I think because its contextual, its more acceptable in some countries that others
18:30.10Wormy_White people do get targetted sometimes in China and so on
18:30.50Wormy_However, in South Africa, well I don't think it is because white people are still far more privilidged and you have the history of Apartheid
18:31.09MonetI thikn xho might have a point
18:31.31MonetTo scoff at tribal attitudes is kind of arrogent, as it could be a form of tribalism as well
18:31.54HachimanSpeaking of tribalism
18:31.59CourseworkiosCyranian: Perhaps yeah
18:32.28HachimanCourseworkios: One character concept I had in mind for the Fantasyverse was a snow dwarf druid / outcast of some kind who is also a werewolf
18:32.36HachimanOr has the ability to assume a wolflike form
18:33.57The_RandomnessAdmiralPanda: Want to hear about that campaign idea of mine after I go eat lunch?

18:34.31AdmiralPandabest time for ideas tbh
18:34.38Wormy_Courseworkios:  Its probably the same within races too.  Someone showing their Japanese Pride won't go down well in China or Hong Kong

18:34.55HachimanAdmiralPanda: So, every Hugh Jackman movie?
18:35.01AdmiralPandaEXACTLY
18:35.03Cyrannianhttps://www.facebook.com/Nerdist/videos/1253478281336644/ - I ship it
18:35.34AdmiralPandabtw my last word on the race issue: my problem isn't that the phrase "white pride" is automatically racist, it's that it has the connotation that it's unacceptable for a white person to be happy being white
18:35.56HachimanCyrannian: The offspring of Tormund Giantsbane and Brienne of Tarth would be horrifyingly tough
18:36.11CourseworkiosHachiman: Woof, good idea

18:36.40CourseworkiosMaybe he is like a Slayer or something
18:36.48HachimanPerhaps
18:36.50CourseworkiosWormy_: Yes, you'll probably get smacked in the face
18:37.23HachimanI imagine that the snow dwarves are far less unified than the Khargrim
18:37.25CourseworkiosArabs are also despised in countries like Iran because they too were once oppressors there
18:37.49HachimanAnd are divided between various kingdoms with a council of lords and kings while the Khargrim are ruled under one king
18:38.13Wormy_AdmiralPanda:  Yeah I don't accept that shame and sin some people want us to feel.

18:40.18Wormy_However, I don't feel threatened by minorities seeking empowerment so long as its not hateful
18:40.23MonetI play PC but infortunately ROckstar divides its console and PC players
18:40.47Wormy_But if I see a white pride movement, they obviously feel threatened and that calls into question why.  And often its racism
18:41.17CyrannianAye it would have been good to meet up in it

21:08.17ImperiosWell I am not sure tbh
21:08.41ImperiosShe's feminist, which is either the opposite of the neckbeard stereotype or, considering she's female, part of it
21:08.44HachimanI also like how "hipster trend" is a legitimate thing yet also an oxymoron
21:08.58ImperiosI like her style tbh

21:13.17MonetI think I'm a yupie rather than a hipster.
21:13.37HachimanEh, I'd not say so

22:31.25HachimanNow I wanna know more
22:33.48The_Randomnesssure, let me pull up my notes on my phone
22:35.22The_RandomnessSo, some adventurers hear about an archeological site in a major port city, and the scholars working on it are looking for some more people to help them with it

22:38.13The_RandomnessEventually you'll go to the site, and you can help out the archeologists there with various things, like trying to make sense of things like tablets they've found, ancient murals, etc. The site looks like some sort of ancient, buried city

23:12.19Imperios...Now... how should one call people from Taiwan then
23:12.41Hachimanwat
23:12.52The_RandomnessYeah, it's complicated
23:13.00TybusenYeah
23:13.05HachimanWait what, really
23:13.09ImperiosWell
23:13.16TybusenThere are some people in Taiwan who still think that Taiwan is the rightful government of all of China
23:13.22ImperiosTaiwan is basically the South Korea to PRC's North Korea
23:13.24TybusenThere are others who think Taiwan is it's own thing
23:13.34HachimanOoh
23:14.00TybusenIt's a little bit different from the SK-NK siutation, I think
23:14.01ImperiosExcept it's the communist government which is competent and the capitalist one which is bombastic hur
23:14.24ImperiosWell the principle is roughly the same but the scales are different
23:14.36ImperiosTaiwan's official name is "Republic of China"
23:14.56ImperiosAs opposed to "*People's" Republic of China"
23:14.59ImperiosSo some people would prefer it to be called that
23:15.10TybusenTaiwan is the same as the original ROC that ruled China before the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949
23:15.26TechnobliteratorImperios, you never answered my question :c
23:15.38TybusenSame government, but officially Taiwan maintains that they are the legitimate government of China
23:16.03HachimanBut Taiwan is fucking tiny compared to China isn't it
23:16.03TybusenAnd the PRC prefers that Taiwan continue to think it's part of China rather than it's own thing
23:16.20TybusenYeah, but Taiwan's government was at one point the legitimate Chinese government
23:16.47TybusenTaiwan's government is the continuation of the Republic of China founded by Sun Yat-sen
23:16.58ImperiosSo basically a tiny island claiming it's China
23:17.26MonetIts more what's left of the pre-Peoples Republic China
23:17.50TybusenIt would be more correct to say "former Chinese government trapped on Taiwan that continues to claim that it is the Chinese government"
23:18.39Technobliteratoruh, I dunno why a country being tiny means it cannot have its own government
23:18.43TechnobliteratorIreland is fairly small
23:19.12TybusenTechno: I think it's more that a small island country like Taiwan claims the entirety of PRC China
23:19.24TybusenLike if Ireland claimed the entirety of the European mainland
23:20.01TechnobliteratorThat would be...really silly?
23:20.15TybusenThat's basically what Impy was saying
23:20.30TybusenThough to be fair, Taiwan has a more legitimate claim to China than Ireland to mainland Europe
23:20.37The_Randomness^
23:21.06TechnobliteratorI have no idea what's going on with China right now, pretty sure it's still a major violator of human rights
23:21.16TybusenWell yeah
23:21.31TybusenBut the PRC-ROC debate has been going on ever since 1949
23:21.32DrodoEmpireWell, yes, Communist China remains a danger to its own citizenry
23:21.34MonetThe Taiwanese Government claims itself to be the administration established by Sun-Yat Sen
23:21.48TybusenMonet: It is that exactly
23:21.55DrodoEmpire^
23:22.02TybusenIt's not just a claim, they *are* Sun Yat-sen's RoC
23:22.07Technobliteratorit doesn't appear to me that the situation in China can ever improve
23:22.08TechnobliteratorAlas
23:22.18HachimanReminds me of Saudi Arabia
23:22.37MonetHachiman: Elaborate?
23:22.38TechnobliteratorSaudi Arabia is a serious violator of human rights, yes
23:22.43TechnobliteratorIt's just extremely backwards
23:22.59MonetOr are we talking two different subjects?
23:23.09HachimanMajor violator of human rights that is very unlikely to ever improve its social situations while also unfortunately having a major hand in the capitalist market
23:23.15TybusenI think the comparison is that SA and China are both serious human rights violators who the American government sorta overlooks because of strong economic ties
23:23.35TechnobliteratorFar as the Middle East goes, Turkey is probably the closest thing to a country that isn't just backwards thinking in many different ways, but it still has Erdogan
23:23.41HachimanErm
23:23.47HachimanYeah I was gonna mention Erdogan
23:24.00TechnobliteratorWho's just a complete manbaby
23:24.06TybusenTurkey was founded on the principle of being a forward-thinking secular Muslim country, though Erdogan is reversing a lot of that
23:24.19HachimanSecond coming of Ataturk when
23:24.33Tybusenhey
23:24.41TybusenSo if the Turkish government does something reasonable
23:24.43TybusenWould we say
23:24.45Tybusen"Atta turk"
23:24.47TechnobliteratorI hope they get rid of Erdogan
23:24.49The_Randomnessayy
23:24.50HachimanFucking hell
23:24.50Technobliteratorhaha
23:25.35TechnobliteratorAlso, as far as chances to ever improve in social situations, I'd say it's slightly more likely for SA to improve than China
23:25.50TechnobliteratorIt's really awwful in most African countries too, for similar reasons
23:25.53HachimanEh, still quite far-fetched
23:26.01TechnobliteratorYeah, alas
23:26.16TechnobliteratorOf course, I say this, but I don't have much faith in the human race in general
23:26.45HachimanChina, several countries in the Middle East, and many African countries are what I would consider lost causes
23:26.53TybusenSA has a good chance to improve since the younger members of its ruling family (i.e. who will be the rulers of SA in the coming years) are markedly more liberal than their parents
23:26.59HachimanNot particularly their own fault but yeah
23:27.21TybusenChina will likely not improve without a gigantic revolution, since China is too damn big to implement reform well
23:27.26MonetChina's slowly growing wealthier though.
23:27.38TechnobliteratorYeah, but none of the wealth is going to the people who need it
23:27.39HachimanChina needs to split its fucking territories goddamn
23:27.39MonetAs inthe people themselves are getting wealthier
23:27.50TechnobliteratorOr not enough of it is
23:28.07TechnobliteratorOf course, the population there is stupidly high
23:28.15Technobliteratorso it's not easy
23:28.45TybusenChina's political establishment is too entrenched for there to be any revolutionary change to happen soon, I'd say
23:28.59ImperiosHachiman: One difference though
23:29.07ImperiosChinese people are actually working
23:29.15HachimanTrue
23:29.29TybusenAnd it's exacerbated by the fact that China is very socially unopen compared to other countries mired by corruption and gridlock
23:29.30ImperiosLike despite their human rights abuses they have at least built
23:29.54TechnobliteratorThey've also done next to nothing about climate change
23:30.09HachimanTechnobliterator: Many countries haven't, though
23:30.18TechnobliteratorUnfortunately, yes
23:30.23TechnobliteratorGermany has done a great job, though
23:30.33HachimanEither their leaders deny climate change or they do not see it as economically advantageous to switch to alternative resources
23:30.41TechnobliteratorI wish more countries moved to nuclear or renewable energy sources
23:30.43TechnobliteratorYup
23:30.48Hachiman>nuclear
23:30.49MonetThe second point is somewhat common i nAfrica

23:31.00ImperiosThen we shall hoard all of our freshwater and rule the world
23:31.04ImperiosBy distributing it
23:31.06TechnobliteratorWell, I came around
23:31.09ImperiosWe have Baikal yo
23:31.24TechnobliteratorI kind of figure that nuclear energy is a pretty great solution
23:31.32ImperiosNukes are best
23:31.33Technobliteratorgiven that it will not run out for a few thousand years
23:31.34HachimanImperios: China will just harvest water from its inevitable asteroid mining business
23:31.34Technobliteratorand by then
23:31.42Technobliteratorwe will probably have something better anyway
23:31.42MonetWhile they would eb very effective in central africa, effective solar panels require some advanced manufacturing as wel las exotic materials.
23:31.59TechnobliteratorI'm not a fan of the waste it produces still, but I think it's a good solution
23:32.17ImperiosHachiman: http://cdn4.gurl.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bb35bd0b72642c44b6f7f0a793bcd0d561173050a57b232ac899c81ee7222ad8.jpg

23:32.41HachimanIt hurts because I see and know people like that
23:32.54TybusenUltimately, the waste produced by nuclear fission is not quite as bad as that produced by fossil fuels
23:33.03TechnobliteratorYeah, Wormy, I'd love for a breakthrough in nuclear fusion
23:33.07TechnobliteratorBut it doesn't look likely
23:33.10MonetNuclear waste is expensive ot handle, but its still pretty clena compared ot coal or gas.
23:33.13ImperiosDem British slags

23:33.19ImperiosNo offense Jo
23:33.24Technobliterator: |
23:33.42The_RandomnessI'm pretty sure that there's already ways to design reactors that produce little waste, or can reuse it
23:33.57Wormy__Fusion is a physical process, so the only limitations are of engineering, a matter of knowing how.
23:34.06HachimanHopefully we will be able to engineer nuclear spacecraft at some point in the next few decades
23:34.16TybusenAnd the nice thing about nuclear waste compared to greenhouse gases is that it's very easy to keep it all in one place where you can keep track of it
23:34.22TechnobliteratorI wish faster than light travel was actually possible
23:34.40HachimanInsert copypasta here about being born too late / too early
23:34.40TechnobliteratorBut I don't know if it ever will be

23:37.58HachimanNeeds more communism up in this bitch
23:38.06ImperiosYeah commies will be the third force
23:38.14HachimanAlso note that Nazis have had Muslim soldiers before I think
23:38.15MonetScientific advancement isn't the sort of thing that automatically goes faster when you feed it more money.
23:38.22ImperiosHachiman: Of course they did
23:38.25TechnobliteratorNazi vs ISIS would honetsly be fun to watch and laugh at
23:38.30HachimanMonet: Not with that attitude it isn't
23:38.30ImperiosBut I mean modern-day neo-Nazis are not really fans of them
23:38.33Wormy__I'd be very surprised if people haven't heard of this venture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_Starshot
23:38.44ImperiosBut yeah put all the far-right trash in Europe
23:38.56ImperiosPut all the Islamist trash in Europe, and in the Middle East too
23:39.01MonetHachiman: Its the nature of the scientific method.
23:39.03ImperiosPit them against each other
23:39.07HachimanWormy__: Damn
23:39.15DrodoEmpireYeah I've heard Wormy
23:39.17ImperiosThey'll probably do it anyway
23:39.18TybusenMonet: True, but getting more practice with the technology means that we can figure out optimizations, which will cut down on the time costs of building new tech
23:39.48MonetTybusen: More money ney will help. I'm not denying that.
23:39.55Monetmore money wil lhelp*
23:40.35MonetBut the nature of modern science is performing hundreds of tests before ocming ot a conclusion.
23:40.37HachimanWormy__: Hopefully I am still alive in 50 years from now to see the results of this
23:40.45Wormy__indeed
23:40.47HachimanIf it is not delayed and does set sail 20 years from now
23:41.16TechnobliteratorWhy can't they invent a space elevator : |
23:41.32TechnobliteratorOr was that proven to not work?
23:41.34The_RandomnessBecause space elevators are hard
23:41.35MonetThere have been prototypes
23:41.38HachimanHonestly, I just hope to be able to hear of the confirmation of extraterrestrial life before I kick the bucket in about 60 or so years from now
23:41.39The_RandomnessLike, ludicrously so
23:42.10HachimanIt would be easier to build a space elevator on the Moon than it would be on Earth but space debris is always a worry with things like this
23:42.13TechnobliteratorLike, physically impossible?
23:42.30TechnobliteratorOr just not feasible?
23:42.48The_RandomnessThe latter, I think, but I don't know too much about this sort of thing
23:43.00HachimanNot impossible, no, but we do not have the materials for it as of the moment plus we have no feasible way to protect a space elevator from whatever debris is in Earth's orbit
23:43.03MonetWe're talking about hoisting a tether into an orbit 35,000km above the surface of the Earth.
23:43.09ImperiosYou guys hoping for a better future?
23:43.15ImperiosI mean we're slowly descending into hell
23:43.20Wormy__We could build an elevator on the moon with modern materials though
23:43.20The_Randomnesszzz
23:43.27ImperiosOur governments cannot even protect our citizen anymore
23:43.34TechnobliteratorI mean
23:43.38ImperiosLike sure life will get better
23:43.40The_RandomnessImperios: Look at the world and tell me with a straight face that things are getting worse overall
23:43.42Wormy__Thats what they want you to believe Imperios
23:43.43ImperiosBut also worse in many ways
23:44.07HachimanMaybe Donald Trump will lend NASA a small loan of a million dollars
23:44.11TechnobliteratorThe way I see it, constant blasts off to space without an elevator isn't that feasible
23:44.30ImperiosThe_Randomness: I look outside and see abandoned buildings and factories everywhere
23:44.32Technobliteratoryeah, hopefully President Trump will just decide to be an egomaniac and pour money into NASA
23:44.45Technobliteratorto just be the first president to get a ship on Mars or something
23:44.51The_RandomnessImperios: Look at the rest of the world and tell me that things are getting worse overall
23:44.55ImperiosWell
23:44.58MonetHow isn't it that feasible when we've been doing it for 65+ years?
23:45.00The_RandomnessGuess what? Things are getting better overall.
23:45.03ImperiosJust look at Africa and the Middle East
23:45.04HachimanBUILD A WALL AROUND THE MARTIANS
23:45.13ImperiosThings there are definitely not doing better
23:45.17HachimanMiddle East and Africa have always been shitholes
23:45.20ImperiosAhem
23:45.22The_RandomnessSure, those areas are having issues, but they are getting better
23:45.24TybusenI mean, if you believe the theory about cyclical history, we're about to hit the shittiest times since WWII, followed by a new golden age
23:45.26HachimanI expect to find shit in my toilet
23:45.28ImperiosThey were much better
23:45.32ImperiosIn the early 20th century
23:45.42ImperiosAnd in the 20th century in general
23:45.42TechnobliteratorI thought we've already hit the worst times since WWII
23:45.43Wormy__I think optimism and pesscism are both false.  Yes I want a better future, and yes, I think one is possible.  But not certain.
23:46.02The_RandomnessWormy__: Yes, that is why we need to work towards a better future
23:46.05ImperiosAmerica
23:46.06ImperiosWell
23:46.09DrodoEmpireRight, statistics don't lie, Imperios.
23:46.14Wormy__There will always be problems to confront, and there will always be solutions
23:46.14ImperiosI look at America and all I see are crazies
23:46.15TybusenTechnobliterator: That's true, actually, though we're going to hit the true crisis point of this time period around 2020
23:46.20DrodoEmpireThings *are* getting better
23:46.22HachimanStatistics can be falsified though
23:46.25HachimanJust sayin'
23:46.29The_Randomnessoh come on
23:46.33DrodoEmpireAsspulling individual examples can't disprove it
23:46.35HachimanI'm not saying they are
23:46.38ImperiosI mean
23:46.40TechnobliteratorWhat makes you say that?
23:46.42DrodoEmpireOf course they can be
23:46.42HachimanBut you know, stuff like that's happened before
23:46.44ImperiosLike sure things get better in many ways
23:46.45ImperiosBut
23:46.47ImperiosTrump
23:46.50TechnobliteratorDonald Trump's 2020 reelection? :p
23:46.50The_Randomnessso?
23:46.53DrodoEmpireOoh, big deal
23:46.54The_RandomnessTrump is one person
23:46.54Wormy__Humanity is a little crazy, so what?
23:47.03Wormy__Its part of our talent.
23:47.03HachimanThere have been worse leaders than Trump
23:47.05DrodoEmpireHe has some crazy ideas
23:47.07TybusenTechnobliterator: I mean, it's just a historical model, it may not be accurate
23:47.09DrodoEmpireThat's it
23:47.09ImperiosHaving a significant chance to become the most powerful man in the world
23:47.12ImperiosThat's a problem
23:47.12TechnobliteratorFair enough
23:47.25ImperiosI mean compared to, say, the 90s, where things in the world were slowly getting better
23:47.26DrodoEmpireYeah, there have been worse people in higher positions of power
23:47.31DrodoEmpireAgain
23:47.33TechnobliteratorImp, honestly, in the worst case scenario
23:47.34ImperiosNow we're in a stagnation period I think
23:47.39TechnobliteratorTrump will be like Erdogan
23:47.42DrodoEmpireYou're subjective interpretation of reality means nothing
23:47.42ImperiosI don't see positive change
23:47.45DrodoEmpire*your
23:47.46TybusenTechnobliterator: But in the context of American history, it does align WWII, American Civil War, and the American Revolution on a pretty solid 80-year cycle
23:47.47ImperiosTechnology sure
23:47.47TechnobliteratorA massive manbaby who tries to silence critics
23:48.05TechnobliteratorI think his election is looking inevitable
23:48.10HachimanA massive manbaby who I hope will not let Congress get in his way unlike Obama
23:48.12TechnobliteratorI don't have oany faith in the DNC at all
23:48.15The_Randomnesszzzzzzzzz
23:48.22The_Randomnesswe need more doom and gloom in here
23:48.24TechnobliteratorBut I might be wrong
23:48.26TybusenAccording to the cyclical model, we're in the "winter" right before the worst crisis of this era
23:48.35TybusenLike how the Great Depression was to WWII
23:48.46The_Randomnessgod damn I hate trying to discuss anything that even looks near politics on here
23:48.48ImperiosTybusen: The worst crisis with the best hair
23:49.01ImperiosAs for the Middle East
23:49.02Hachiman>not having a pompadour
23:49.12ImperiosI see Salafism and extremism spreading across it like a wave
23:49.13TybusenThings are gonna get shitty, but then things are gonna be looking up and up
23:49.18ImperiosI also see it slowly spreading to Europe
23:49.19MonetThis is why I enjoy being an optimist and not judging existence basedo n its worst goings-on.
23:49.22TybusenThat's what I think at least
23:49.26ImperiosWe're having a cultural shift right here
23:49.33ImperiosThen again we had the same with East Asia
23:49.41TechnobliteratorI mean, like, I'm not seeing many scenarios in which Trump does not win given how awfully out of touch the DNC is
23:49.43ImperiosLike
23:49.46ImperiosIf you think about it
23:49.51Wormy__I don't much like neoliberalism, and that does seem to be dominant in global politics now.
23:49.56TybusenI'm not terribly optimistic about the near future, but I'm much more optimistic for the years that follow the near future
23:50.08TechnobliteratorI'm not terribly optimistifc in general, but
23:50.08ImperiosMany of the fears about Muslims today mirror the fears Europeans and white Americans felt towards Asians
23:50.08DrodoEmpireRight, just because there are problems in the world doesn't mean you should exaggerate them and then shy away from them ;p
23:50.10DrodoEmpire*:p
23:50.11HachimanI mean, come on guys; it's not like a nuclear winter is likely to occur at this point
23:50.16MonetThings have been geting better.
23:50.17TechnobliteratorI think Imp and Hachi are just being overdramatic
23:50.21DrodoEmpire^
23:50.23The_RandomnessTechnobliterator: and you
23:50.24ImperiosHachiman: NO GUARANTEES PLZ
23:50.26ImperioswELL
23:50.27ImperiosWell
23:50.29TechnobliteratorAnd me?
23:50.33The_Randomnessyes, and you
23:50.39ImperiosI am not saying a crisis is that bad for history overall
23:50.46ImperiosMaybe we're at the dawn of a new civilisation to come
23:50.47TechnobliteratorCan you point to anything here I've overdramaticized?
23:50.51ImperiosMaybe there'll be the new Middle Ages
23:50.55The_Randomnessyou're one step short of saying that the sky is falling
23:50.57ImperiosAnd then a Renaissance
23:51.03TybusenThings aren't great right now, but I think they will get better
23:51.04ImperiosAnd plenty of Deus Vult
23:51.05TechnobliteratorWhen have I said anything like that? ?_?
23:51.11The_RandomnessSimply because Trump has a shot at being president
23:51.14TechnobliteratorI don't think you've been reading my comments here
23:51.43TechnobliteratorI've said his election looks very likely given how poorly the DNC are managing at the moment, but that he would turn out to be like Erdogan, ie a massive manbaby
23:51.49Wormy__No, we're  still in the post-Enlightenment era.  The world is change exponentially faster.  In the middle ages, generations passed without many changes in the lives of individuals.
23:51.59DrodoEmpire^
23:52.16The_RandomnessHow is it likely? Sure, you may not like "Shillary," but she's more popular than you're giving her credit for
23:52.27*** join/#sporewiki ImpyDroid (~Anders@95.140.92.87)
23:52.35The_RandomnessIt is possible, yes, but likely? I can't say.
23:52.35HachimanIt's like people forget that America has had bad Presidents before yet it is still standing
23:52.43Wormy__<Wormy__> No, we're  still in the post-Enlightenment era.  The world is change exponentially faster.  In the middle ages, generations passed without many changes in the lives of individuals.
23:52.43TybusenHillary polls poorly with Independents
23:52.51HachimanI mean, George Bush was in office until only a decade or so ago
23:52.51The_Randomnesstrue
23:53.00TechnobliteratorIt's not solely Hillary's fault, it's the fault with the DNC
23:53.00ImpyDroid...Oh God him
23:53.16HachimanThere is no possibly way Trump could top Bush, is all I am saying
23:53.16ImpyDroidDoes he have a reputation of a Dumbass here too
23:53.18MonetHachiman: Never forget.
23:53.23ImpyDroid*dumbass
23:53.28TybusenOne shouldn't count out how many of the people voting in the Dem primaries are only there for Bernie
23:53.35TechnobliteratorAt the moment, they've been responsible for disenfranchising a hell of a lot of voters, and their campaign tactics against Trump do not strike me as compelling ones
23:53.35MonetWhat about Jimmy Carter?
23:53.45ImpyDroidBush was stupid but sane, Trump is smart but insane
23:54.03HachimanMany great innovators were not sane of mind, Imp
23:54.04TybusenAlso, Hillary is only barely beating a man who refuses to hammer her hard on anything
23:54.09TechnobliteratorThey appear to be the general identity politics (which don't work and insult the intelligence of voters)
23:54.33Wormy__That being said, while many things for humanity do seem to be getting statistically better, and every pessimistic prophesy proven untrue, and technology and science is still in progress, I do feel as though some things lag more than others.  There is a lot of scary things happening in politics right now
23:54.37TechnobliteratorAnd you get the sense that they'll be discussing sexism more than they'll be discussing policy
23:54.39ImpyDroidTrump will be interesting
23:54.51ImpyDroidHillary is aggressive as fuck
23:54.55ImpyDroidIsn't she?
23:54.57The_Randomnessidk
23:55.14Wormy__Thats not a means to predict only doom and gloom in my opinion though, because the politicians are in an as much uncertainty as the rest of us.
23:55.21The_RandomnessBut at least her tax/economic plan isn't going to be a certain disaster that'll run us into extreme debty
23:55.23TybusenHillary's identity politics-based tactics that she's used on Bernie won't work on Trump, because Trump and his supporters aren't inclined to give a shit
23:55.36HachimanWormy__: I kind of feel like humanity is at a weird point where while we are growing on a technological level, our ethical, moral, social, and emotional evolution has yet to catch up
23:55.40TechnobliteratorAnd they're throwing a candidate who has very poor favourability ratings and two FBI investigations, one of which appear to end up poorly
23:55.54ImpyDroidHachiman: "We have guided missiles and misguided men"
23:56.06TybusenIn my belief, Hillary's "better" social and tax policies absolutely do not make up for her being a corrupt, bought-and-sold politician and a serious war hawk
23:56.24DrodoEmpire^
23:56.24HachimanBut Hillary's down with the kids and minorities, dawg
23:56.28The_Randomnesstrue, but I don't buy that "Shillary" stuff
23:56.30Wormy__Hachiman:  While I understand that feeling, arguably things are getting better in the long run morally at least
23:56.34TybusenHachiman: She's just like your abuela
23:56.43The_RandomnessShow me that she's actually corrupt, and we'll talk
23:56.44TechnobliteratorI am of the opinion that Bernie would be in the lead had he been given fairer coverage and had there been much less election fraud in places like Arizona, but I'm only speculating there
23:56.58TechnobliteratorYeah, Random, there's one plain example of that
23:57.02TechnobliteratorThe Bankruptcy Bill
23:57.12HachimanBankruptcy Bill
23:57.13TechnobliteratorShe campaigned against it, took loads of money, and then voted for it
23:57.14TybusenI mean, it's easy to dismiss "corruption" as a conspiracy
23:57.14HachimanBill Clinton
23:57.16HachimanMy God#
23:57.20HachimanIt all makes sense now
23:57.27ImpyDroidWhat about the Panama Papers tho
23:57.34Wormy__But humans will always make mistakes, have false ideas, and act crazily.  That can't be helped, only corrected.
23:57.39TechnobliteratorIt's not corruption, really
23:58.01Wormy__And we have progressed far enough to make some error correcting mechanisms, like science
23:58.02The_RandomnessWhen was this again?
23:58.04TechnobliteratorIt's the fact that a politician basically only spends time around other rich people and earns stupid amounts of money from a speech
23:58.18TybusenAlso, don't forget that as SoS, she sold arms to countries that donated to the Clinton Foundation
23:58.33TechnobliteratorVersus Bernie who always has completely open rallies and refuses to take money from richer people
23:58.34HachimanGuys
23:58.44HachimanAt least Shillary is not the Zodiac Killer
23:58.49The_Randomnesslmao
23:58.59TechnobliteratorTo me, you don't have to say HAHA SHILLARY CORRUPT, I don't buy that at all, but
23:59.10Technobliteratorit's clear which of the two is more likely to represent the middle class
23:59.13The_RandomnessTybusen: sauce? Haven't heard about that one
23:59.13Wormy__That, and I remember Vsauce suggested that the reasons humans spread across Earth and survived, and Neanderthals, despite evidence of having boasts did not, was because we might have been a little crazier, thinking more out the box.
23:59.37Technobliteratoroh, there's another reason that Bernie's not doing as well with votes that I imagine he would be doing
23:59.40Wormy__So the same thing that makes a Donald Trump can also make a Nikola Tesla
23:59.42TechnobliteratorSome Bernie supporters are just idiots
23:59.44HachimanPersonally I feel that we should have the Presidential candidates locked in a room together and have them fight to the death
23:59.53HachimanAnd the winner comes out as the next President
