09:18.54*** join/#openslug koen|away (i=koen@dominion.kabel.utwente.nl)
09:53.07rwhitbyRammY: yes, use slugtool
09:57.24RammYokay, ill try it
09:58.50RammYjust to mention: i wrote a (yet unfinished) howto, "gentoo on nslu2" into the gentoo-forum: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2987624.html
09:59.16RammYThanks to you all - im using openslug for the initial installationnsystem :)
09:59.55RammY(even if i havent successfully booted the kernel till yet.. :( )
10:16.27rwhitbyRammY: would you like to contribute a GentooSlug wiki page?
10:20.25eFfeMrwhitby, I saw that http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/AddEthernetAdapter just refers to Perhiperals/EthernetAdapter
10:20.35eFfeMdo we want to maintain this ref?
10:20.49eFfeM(actually I'm not that keen on all those redirecting pages)
10:22.26rwhitbyeFfeM: The plan is to migrate things from HowTos to Peripherals and Applications (where it makes sense).  But the old pages are left there because things outside of the wiki link to it.
10:23.34eFfeMrwhitby, ok. In the past I removed a page or two which were not in the howto any more (notably about audio)
10:26.12rwhitbyyeah, I'm not fussed if pages are removed
10:27.41eFfeMif they are there but contain only a ref they are mostly dead wood and they obfuscate the results when searching for things
10:29.00rwhitbyagreed
10:32.51RammYrwhitby: wure, i will post my howto into the nslu-linux-wiki when its done
10:33.23RammYs/wure/sure
10:33.35RammYbut before i have to get that kernel booting...
10:36.21RammY;)
10:37.17eFfeMrwhitby, can we help you with tossing a word to you every day? Let's start with "Rechner" ... :-)
10:37.41dyoung-awayI only have one german phrase that has stuck
10:37.48RammYnaaa.. lets start with "Kaiserschmarrn!"
10:37.53dyoung-awayit was a VxWorks error.
10:38.02eFfeMdyoung-away, let me guess "ein Bier bitte"
10:38.12eFfeMor zwei or drei
10:38.17dyoung-away"ist ein fehler aufgetraten" (or something like that)
10:38.26eFfeMlol there are much better phrases to remember
10:38.34dyoung-awayso I was all "yeah, no kdding, I KNWO an error occured dammit"
10:39.12dyoung-awayeFfeM: Actually for me its "Ein Dunkels bitte" :-)
10:39.50eFfeMah, that's also good. I'd like to try all different kinds
10:41.12eFfeM(and no, I'm not french :-) )
10:41.44eFfeMI suppose there is nobody around with ivman knowledge, is there?
10:42.25eFfeMactually I am looking for some generic code to recognize a connected still camera
10:42.43eFfeMI can add a udev rule for this specific cam, but that is not really what I would like to have
10:43.38dyoung-awayeFfeM: BTW good work on stuff.
10:44.03dyoung-awayI've not been able to do nslu2 work lately; but have been observing whats been going on
10:45.13eFfeMdyoung-away, tnx, actually I am about to check in the latest version of pvrusb2
10:45.34dyoung-awayCool!
10:45.49dyoung-awayMy pvrusb2 is dutifully collecting dust right now.
10:45.59eFfeMhowever I need to have a tda9887.conf in /etc/modutils.conf
10:46.33eFfeMI could probably do this in the pvrusb2 install, but actually it should land in the install of the tda9887 kernel module
10:46.58eFfeMdon't know how to get that in there though as there is no .bb file for that
10:47.08eFfeMI've also asked in #oe, but got no response
10:47.46dyoung-awaySeems to me that since its being put there by the pvrusb2 stuff, it would be fine to put it with the pvrusb2 install stuff.
10:47.55dyoung-awaybut... what do I kn ow?
10:48.42eFfeMyeah, decided that was the 2nd best. Still need to write the few lines in the bb file
10:48.45eFfeMActually I'm kinda turning my slug into a super-duper home server
10:49.31dyoung-awayhehe
10:49.43eFfeMit now has 2 pvrusb2's (one is on loan for a week), a usb dvd writer (for now only used for audio ripping) and I also had some webcams connected
10:49.48dyoung-awayThats my other problem, I kind of ate a lot of drives building sarge....
10:50.09dyoung-awayI only recently recovered some good drives from other service to put on the h ome slug.
10:50.20eFfeMports seem to become the major issue, might need a 2nd hub, and some usb1.1 devices do not really work with 2.0 hubs well
10:50.27eFfeM(or at least the one I have)
10:50.43dyoung-awayare you handy with a soldering iron?
10:50.50eFfeMnot really, why?
10:52.04dyoung-awayThere are 3 other ports on the USB chip that are availble
10:52.15dyoung-awaybut theyre inside and would require some soldering
10:52.16dyoung-awayhttp://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/EnableExtraUSBPorts
10:52.26eFfeMactually I'm also working on adding an audio card to my server. It is recognized, alsamixere changes the volume, it can capture, but it refuses to playback, although it works under fedora
10:52.58eFfeMdyoung-away, yeah, I'm aware of this page. For now, I'm reverting to hubs
10:53.08dyoung-awayI saw that you were discussing with someone that had usb audio working....
10:53.27dyoung-awayI've still got some issues with with my imic.
10:53.37eFfeMyes, he had a different card. there are also reports on the wiki
10:53.57eFfeMkoen|away, also got an imic but apparently has similar problems
10:54.08dyoung-awayI tested one of the internal ports; it seems to work fine.
10:54.21eFfeM(actually at some point I wanted to buy an imic, but compusa could not find them although they were in stock)
10:54.31eFfeMinternal ports of the imic?
10:54.40dyoung-awayNo the internal USB ports.
10:54.46eFfeMah ok.
10:55.08dyoung-awayI took my imic apart too, I have pictures..
10:55.14dyoung-away(looking for link)
10:55.54dyoung-awayAh yes
10:55.56dyoung-awayhttp://nslu2-linux.thestuffguy.com/gallery/iMic
10:56.57eFfeMah cool. what is the chip on it (I cannot read it from the pic)
10:57.43dyoung-awayClick on the picture it gets really big.
10:57.45dyoung-awayits..
10:57.58dyoung-awayMicronas UAC 3556B
10:58.50eFfeMyup, saw it as well, didn't know I could click a 2nd time on the pic
10:59.10dyoung-awayIf you are interseted in other taken apart stuffs there are several other devices in that gallery.
10:59.13eFfeMdon't have any info on this device (its a competitors device :-) )
10:59.38eFfeMmy audio has a lattice ispmach lc4064v in it
11:00.42eFfeMactually I have been debugging the audio stuff and I am becoming convinced that everything is working fine and that it has to do with either the initialisation of the device or it is byte order related (although the last option seems not very likely as I managed to get it working once)
11:00.46dyoung-awaysome other folk are using the imic under ppc linux; so its supposed to work... I just havnt been able to make it do something on a slug.
11:00.46eFfeMcould also be a timing issue
11:00.56eFfeMit worked once ...
11:01.02dyoung-awaySame here.
11:01.08dyoung-awayI made mine work exactly once.
11:01.22eFfeMdo you recall when/what sw?
11:01.32dyoung-awayum...
11:01.40dyoung-awayit was when we first talked about pvrusb2.
11:01.49dyoung-awayso maybe 3 months ago?
11:01.57dyoung-awaythe software would have been .12
11:02.01eFfeMI had it working thu before xmas (the same day I picked up the device) at that point I was still on a 1.6.14 kernel
11:02.19eFfeMactually an openslug snapshot from early dec
11:02.31eFfeMI had it working once at that day
11:02.37dyoung-awayI havnt had a slug powered up since november.
11:02.55eFfeMthen during xmas I upgraded to the head again and ended up at 2.6.15rc5 and it didn't work any more.
11:03.01dyoung-awayhmm
11:03.08eFfeMNo idea if I was just lucky to get it running or if it is version dependent
11:03.15eFfeMdidn't try to go back
11:03.16dyoung-awayMe neither.
11:03.27dyoung-awaythe time I made it work I sat there plugging and unplugging for a while
11:03.45dyoung-awayI think ultimately it worked after 14 plug/unplug cycles
11:05.12eFfeMhm, this sounds pretty similar. I also didn't have it working right away, but did a plug/unplug several times
11:05.35eFfeMalso even now sometimes I can control the volume and mute status right away and sometimes not
11:05.49eFfeMmy device has leds to show the volume and mute status
11:06.04eFfeMsometimes they do not react on alsamixer and sometimes they do
11:06.10dyoung-awayYep
11:06.12eFfeMno idea what is going on
11:06.16dyoung-awayI observed the same thing
11:06.40dyoung-away13 out of 14 times the thing just plain wasnt reconized.
11:06.47eFfeMseems we have a similar problem
11:07.07dyoung-awaydmesg noted "something" being plugged in; but the driver(s) never registered.
11:07.36eFfeModd
11:08.08dyoung-awaysometimes it half got reconized.
11:08.15dyoung-awaylike if I pre-loaded the drivers.
11:08.19dyoung-awaythe plugged.
11:08.37dyoung-awaysometimes alsamixer would know about it (even though it wouldnt actually work)
11:09.43eFfeMsame here, actually now alsamixer seems to work about half of the time
11:10.04dyoung-awayI got mad at mine; it hasnt been plugged for 3 months. :-)
11:11.24eFfeMapparently some cmedia-based devices do work, but typically these are noname devices that are hard-to-get
11:11.51eFfeMof course one can fork out $ 10 or so to get an el-cheapo usb sound device on ebay in the hope that one works
11:12.40dyoung-awayNah, I got enough el-cheepo junk that doesnt do anything already.
11:13.54eFfeMsame here
11:19.10eFfeMdyoung-away, found this on the web:
11:19.10eFfeMMy experience with the iMic has been very erratic. I've owned three of them and each one worked differently. Some of them seem to be excellent, reliable, quiet devices, others are flakey and noisy. I think they've made some running design changes to them and it's hard to tell what you'll get in advance. At the moment, ALSA doesn't directly support the iMic mixer properly, so it's behavior is also very confusing.
11:20.38eFfeMthe imic does not have digital out, has it?
11:21.12dyoung-awayNo digital out.
11:21.34dyoung-awayMine seems to work fine on the Mac Mini.
11:21.46dyoung-awayso I'll probably eventually just use it there.
11:22.54eFfeMwell, i'm kinda eager to get audio pb on my slug
11:23.14dyoung-awayMe too.  But not with the imic. :-)
11:25.06eFfeMwell, still not ready to give up on this, but it is a little bit on the backburner

13:01.07eFfeMdyoung-away, need some advice
13:01.22eFfeMi'm using pwc and you are listed as the maintainer
13:01.34eFfeMi saw the latest version was 10.0.9
13:01.44eFfeMhowever we are still at 10.0.9-rc1
13:02.16eFfeMdecided it would be a nice time to upgrade so I copied pwc_10.0.9-rc1.bb to pwc_10.0.9.bb and also the associated dirs
13:02.52eFfeMhowever bb seems to prefer the -rc1 version abo the new version
13:03.02eFfeMdo you have a suggestion how to resolve this?
13:04.09eFfeM(b.t.w. I also saw that when upgrading to the head, ipkg apparently moved me back in time as my current version is listed as pwc Philips webcam module version 9.0.2-unofficial loaded.

13:58.50[g2]dyoung-away great shots of the imic BTW!
13:58.54[g2]thx
14:03.28eFfeM[g2], does the imic work on the loft ????
14:04.53[g2]eFfeM I'd imagine it would as it works on the slug right ?
14:05.17eFfeMwell not for dyoung-away ....
14:05.21[g2]I've been meaning to pick one up and try it out
14:05.28eFfeMand I have a different sound card that also does not work
14:05.36eFfeMalthough it works on fc4
14:07.14[g2]Since the iMic is for Apple and thus OSX I'd imagine it's got a decent shot at working
14:07.24[g2]I dunno if there spec's are avialble for the chip
14:07.46[g2]Are you looking to do audio ?
14:08.11eFfeMto me there seems to be an issue with some driver on slug, perhaps caused by be or timing
14:08.19eFfeMyeah, would love to do audio on the slug
14:08.29eFfeMgotta leave for 10 mins, back later
14:08.40[g2]np
14:09.05[g2]I'm looking into bringing up LE on the Loft
14:09.12[g2]that would isolate the BE issue
14:09.26[g2]timing issues will still be there as the Loft runs @ 533
