14:03.16bernie_AndrewPRS: 4.14.18? that's several years old
14:03.43AndrewPRShmm its what comes with latest CentOS
14:03.58jankusanagi_it's ancient xD
14:04.14bernie_AndrewPRS: I don't think anyone around here still remembers KDE 4 :-)
14:04.29AndrewPRST_T
14:04.33jankusanagi_I remember Plasma 4...
14:04.39jankusanagi_my memory is not SO bad
14:04.47bernie_AndrewPRS: enterprise distros ship really old software, and it's usually no longer supported by upstream projects
14:05.05bernie_AndrewPRS: in a way, it
14:05.17AndrewPRSyeah, unfortunately they are buggy sometimes
14:05.22bernie_AndrewPRS: in a way, it's "stable"... unless you need a bug fixed :-)
14:05.26AndrewPRSyeah...
14:05.41AndrewPRSthe bugs are "stable" there :P

14:07.45AndrewPRSI'm reading that apparently RHEL will drop support for kde
14:07.56AndrewPRSthat's quite unfortunate ... I prefer kde over gnome
14:08.15thiagothen don't use centos/rhel
14:08.58AndrewPRSI have no choice :/
14:09.20AndrewPRSI develop a piece of software and our users use centos/rhel
14:09.31thiagohave you ever heard of containers?
14:09.33thiagovirtual machines?
14:09.37*** join/#kde ShadowKyogre (7358dd25f8@gateway/shell/jabberfr/x-vduvrcecfypiofdh)
14:10.03AndrewPRSvirtual machines yes... they are a bit clumsy to work with
14:10.10AndrewPRSand containers... like docker?
14:10.10CarlSchwanvirtual machines are slow. CentOs 8 will have a more recent version of Plasma
14:10.30AndrewPRSi'm not sure what the difference between containers and virtual machines is
14:10.36thiagolike docker, but not necessarily docker
14:10.38bernie_AndrewPRS: ah yeah, i read that too. I'm using KDE on Fedora, which is essentially RH with up-to-date packages and minus the support contract
14:10.57thiagothe point is that you can create a VM or a root of RHEL/CentOS of any version on your KDE-supporting host OS
14:11.08thiagoyou enter that container when you need to develop your application
14:11.16thiagois it a graphical application?
14:11.18AndrewPRSyes
14:12.06thiagook, graphical from containers is difficult, but not impossible. VMs are easier.
14:12.28thiagoI'd select a modern host OS, even if I weren't choosing it for Plasma desktop
14:12.32thiagojust get something modern
14:12.40thiagodevelop your application there, test it for the most part there
14:12.54bernie_thiago: but then the binaries he builds would not work on Centos 7...
14:12.55thiagobut frequently fire up the CentOS VM, compile there and test
14:13.08bernie_thiago: ah, right
14:13.13AndrewPRSyeah.. in fact my binary depends on libraries that only compile for centos 7
14:13.24thiagoas for release binaries, your *CI* should be doing that. Not you on your VM.
14:13.30AndrewPRSwe upgraded to 7 recently... we were stuck in 6 for a while
14:13.30thiagoyour CI has a CentOS container to build.
14:13.42thiagoif you don't have a CI, you should upgrade to the year 2016
14:13.54AndrewPRSyeah we do have a CI , buildbo
14:13.57AndrewPRS*buildbot
14:14.04AndrewPRSnot sure if it supports containers though...
14:14.24bernie_hard to test GUI apps in CI though... you can verify that it builds, perhaps verify that it starts... but does it really work?
14:14.24AndrewPRSin any case, my application most probably won't compile on a bleeding edge modern distro
14:14.40AndrewPRSalso... modern distros are bug ridden ...
14:15.05AndrewPRSsorry for the rant ;P
14:15.32AndrewPRSit's unfortunate that kde 4 doesn't get bugfixes :/
14:15.35bernie_AndrewPRS: all software is bug ridden... the larger the codebase, the more bugs... but that doesn't mean that users encounter more bugs in your daily usage
14:15.55thiagothe fact taht your software doesn't compile on modernr distros is entirely on you
14:15.57thiagoyou should fix that
14:16.25AndrewPRSyeah... we are working on that , slowly :P takes time for big codebases
14:16.32bernie_AndrewPRS: in fact, i would propose that modern software is more robust due to advancements in languages, compilers, tools, testing infrastructure, engineering culture...
14:16.33AndrewPRSin fact we are stuck on qt 4.8 ... T_T
14:16.37thiagoanyway, your CI needs to at minimum compile. If you have that, you don't need a CentOS host to make releases
14:16.52thiagoQt 4.8 is unsupported and is insecure
14:16.57AndrewPRSyup I know :/

14:17.47thiagoyou've only had 7 years to investigate and figure out what's wrong
14:18.17thiagois right now discussing the timeline for Qt 6
14:18.40AndrewPRSexciting!
14:18.44thiagoanyway, your choice of build and test environment is not a reqruirement for your desktop environment
14:18.49AndrewPRSmaybe in a few decades we can adopt qt 6  *lol*
14:18.57thiagoI know a lot of poeple developing for Linux that use just Windows or macOS, running Linux in a VM
14:19.11AndrewPRSyeah... some other devs do that
14:19.29bernie_I once consulted for a supermarket chain that was using some IBM cash registers running an ancient linux distro on a weird non-intel x86 with a weird JVM and a huge Java app they had written
14:19.35thiagobut since you're developing with Qt, you can do quite a lot on your host machine (even Windows and macOS), since it's cross-platform
14:19.48thiagobut you need to test on what your customers will use
14:20.08AndrewPRSyup :/
14:20.09bernie_told them that these quirks were undebuggable, upgrade your linux distro, switch to real JDK, use a real PC...
14:20.22bernie_but they had thousands of those machines in the field, lol :-)
