00:26.18jhutson456i've tried a few google searches and the pages it pulls up are dead. is there a distinct advantage by one or the other in going with phonon-gstreamer vs phonon-vlc ? I'm doing this all on a clean install of Arch Linux.
00:27.23Mamarokjhutson456: that very much depends on the features you want
00:27.39*** join/#kde tang87 (~tang@93-58-116-120.ip158.fastwebnet.it)
00:27.39Mamarokinstall both so you can switch easily
00:28.45jhutson456I was looking of a good breakdown of features but it was either opinion stuff or dead links, no hard VLC = abc and GS = axc and the difference between b and x is.... know what I mean?
00:29.10Mamarokwith the vlc backend you don't have to install additional codecs, but you don't have some features like gapless or an equalizer in Amarok
00:29.39Mamarokwith the gstreamer one you have gapless and an equalizer, but not so good stream support and you need to install additional plugins
00:30.11Mamarokfor me the vlc backend gives better sound quality over all, but that can vary depending on your hardware
00:30.23Mamarokso install both, and you can test what suits you better
00:30.33jhutson456Thank you Mamarok. If you use both can you combine to make a best of both worlds scenario or do you have to toggle and decide which to use at that time?
00:31.15Mamarokno, you can only use one at a time
00:31.31jhutson456Ok, thank you again for the information. :-)
00:31.41Mamarokand most of the time you will have to restart KDE so phonon takes over the changed backend
00:32.07Mamaroksince I don't need equalizer and gapless the vlc backend makes me quite happy
00:32.29Mamarokbut as I said, that very much depends on the personal preferences, and also on som hardware that works better with one than the other
00:32.31jhutson456I don't need gapless at all and the equalizer would be nice, but isn't needed in any way.
00:33.26jhutson456During installation it asks to choose one or the other so I went with VLC. If I experience any issues then I'll add GS and see how I like it.

01:16.33Mamarokthat depends very much on how much you install
01:16.50Mamarokall KDE projects is a lot of stuff, yes, but do you really need everything?

01:18.55jhutson456I'll remove what I don't need lol
01:19.36Mamarokwell, that probably also drags in all translations, that will indeed take ages :)
01:20.05Jucatothat will most likely pull in everything, including extra wallpapers (those can be large too), education apps, games, etc.

11:11.47siavashserverCorrect value of process count is 109, but ksysguard shows 9 (in pasted picture) and CPU usage stays at 100%.

22:10.54H__in phonon the internal hardware has preference over hdmi (listed earlier) so that's not it (in case you wondered ;-)
