00:36.46Spidais this a known problem?

00:44.01JucatodasKreech: not really surprising. I take a "step back, wait and see" stance on anything "cloud"-related :)
00:44.40dasKreech:-) Your last dent has !owncloud and I got a link to the group that doesn't normally happen unless you are part of the group
00:45.05dasKreechlike if I say !gnome it doesn't go to the group (obviously) but it's also not linked so someone can find the group
00:45.39Jucatohm really? didn't know about that
00:45.41dasKreechI didn't know there was an owncloud group so I was looking through it from your post when it occured to me that you weren't one of the members :)

00:52.28dasKreechWell you see the edge of the cloud starts here....

01:17.36dasKreechI know i have an issue with people calling things cloud as well :)
01:18.22Jucatobut most *cough* cloud *cough* services for feeds (like Google Reader?) would merely just keep track of the feeds themselves. not the status
01:19.03dasKreechdoesn't google reader do status?
01:19.19dasKreechThought that was one of the perks of it
01:20.07Jucatoit's been a long time since I last checked. besides, what I meant is that those would be carried over to any app as well
01:20.16Jucatolike Akregator or whatever feed reader is on the N900
01:20.34dasKreechhmm
01:22.06dasKreechwell that's kinda what I want for an akonadi plugin to own cloud. It backs up state to your instance and then you can either have one profile that everyone of your computer reads/writes to or multiple profiles that all your computers can subscribe to so you can do work/reading/updating at multiple places and see them all over

01:29.48dasKreechA bit interesting to take communicating with someone and making it a Kpart though :)
01:30.00Jucatoheh it would go with the scheme. Gnome has Empathy anyway ...
01:30.39dasKreechGnome has a lot :) There are some advantages to being a loose collection of one off projects with little tiein

01:32.31dasKreechworse
01:32.50dasKreechany gtk app is often claimed as good as a Gnome app
01:34.09Jucatomy minimum requirement for a "KDE app" is that it uses KApplication. whether it's part of an SC or not, I leave that to the judges :)

01:55.27mikerose357so a crossfire setup via whatever wierd method the motherboard maker devised to make this work may make the radeon driver puke
01:56.13dasKreechSho_: So weigh in on this. If you have a decentral structure but it basically assumes that there is a reference point. How can you think of it as decentralized
01:56.40dasKreechNot sure that radeon was intended to work with crossfire like smooth butter on hot toast yer
01:58.09Sho_dasKreech: decentralized means that commits don't have to take a straight path from a developer (A) to the canonical repo (B) but can take a detour from developer A to another developer (C) before getting to A, while preserving the commit data and meta data unchanged
01:58.14JucatodasKreech: it's technically decentralized but arbitrarily centralized by those using it. doesn't change the decentralized nature.
01:58.30Sho_err ... s/before getting to A/before getting to B/ (i.e. the repo)
01:59.13Sho_besides, fundamentally speaking a given git repo can interact with any number of other repos bidirectionally, so the "reference point" thing is just a matter of social custom

02:10.02mikerose357influence doesn't have to come from admin rights on a central server
02:11.22mikerose357first off who owns the copyright to the code?
02:11.27dasKreechyeah but the social interactions will decide how the code is used and accessed if it's decentral

04:39.14ichbinderqal: it's in the first location btw. Couldn't find it in the second one
04:39.32Sho_icon themes can be in the icons/ subfolder of any path in XDG_DATA_DIRS and in the share/icons/ subfolder of any path in KDEDIRS and KDEDIR and KDEHOME, and compliant implementations must also check in ~/.icons and /usr/share/pixmaps, an /usr is in XDG_DATA_DIRS and KDEDIRS by default if unset (possibly depending on the KDE build options)
04:39.46qalichbinder: Sho_ has the right idea if you just watch to use a different icon for the application launcher.

04:44.03Sho_to understand "where are icon themes stored", you have to understand how icon lookup is done, which my short overview and the links try to provide
04:44.13ichbinderit's nice learning.
04:44.25Sho_because a single icon theme could actually be stored in ten different folders and what you see in the dialog could be the merged representation of all of those ten folders

04:44.36ichbinderah, I see...
04:44.50Sho_the order of precedence, the locations taken into account, and the environment variables that affect this, are together pretty complex

04:45.07ichbinderSho_: ok, I see... but WHY? :D
04:45.30ichbindercan't it be just as simple as: icons? Go to /usr/share/icons or ~/.icons

04:48.29Sho_another thing that multiple folders (and the ability to set environment variables to affect which folders those are) get you is the ability for a user to override an icon from a system-installed theme by placing files in the right places in his home dir, or anywhere else where he has write access (but doesn't have write access to the system)
04:48.50caotic_IDK why it has been changed that way, but in my opinion is very annoying
04:49.25Sho_caotic_: did you try pulling on the edge to make it larger?
04:50.14caotic_Sho_: I think I tried that the very first time ... since it didnt work then, I didnt suppose it would work now :$
04:50.30Sho_ichbinder: the modern icon theme specification and lookup algorithm is actually shared between KDE and Gnome (and others), but yeah, the user /usr/share/pixmaps legacy compat thing is e.g. actually because old GTK+ versions used it iirc

08:02.34lindsaymobil22i have installed compiz-kde
08:03.16helmuthi. does someone know how to use an external addressbook with twinkle? it seems there are basically two options: 1) convince it to use some kde addressbook (I failed this) 2) generate .twinkle/twinkle.ab from the external ab (how to notify twinkle about those changes then?)
08:04.30lindsaymobil22helmut, no sorry

08:10.56ExilantIf I click on a file on a samba share(in konqueror), say open with "mplayer %u", shouldn't that tell kde not to copy the file, but to simply pass the url?

17:50.33leo_rockwayLinuxhippy: I noticed one of the plasma themes I tried had the same color for the window and the background so I couldn't see the window...

17:51.58Kame2windowshasyou: you are free to use what you like most. but would be nice to know what your reasons are
17:52.05leo_rockwayKDE 4.5.2 works perfectly for me. There's one weird bug in klipper that shows 2 context menus, but that's it.
17:52.50Linuxhippyleo_rockway: hmm, I didn't change it, I am still on elegance
17:53.09Linuxhippyleo_rockway: I have ~40 open bugs I filed ^^
17:53.25windowshasyouKame2: I've been using kde 4.5.2 since its release, before that, I used trunk, and I keep seeing that everything is getting bigger and way more cpu intensive.
17:54.02windowshasyouIts getting to a point to where if I run something like say, doom 3, I notice a huge drop in fps compared to using another DE like 3.xx
17:54.02Linuxhippywindowshasyou: well thats the way software goes, if nobody works to counteract it
17:54.11thiago_homeno one does
17:54.20thiago_homeyou can downgrade to DOS if you want the CPU to be barely used

17:56.48windowshasyoumemory usage for me at least, slowly climbs to over 2 gigs when using nothing more than konversation, kopete, dolphin, and konqueror
17:56.58LinuxhippyKame: QT's X11 backend is *so* extremly bad, don't point your fingers to drivers
17:57.17Linuxhippyit often doesn't give drivers a chance to accelerate stuff
17:57.50Linuxhippythings like gradients, transformed blits even tiling are done by QT on the CPU
17:58.02Kame2windowshasyou: there where a memory leak in 4.5.1 and before. and still is a cache in plasma that can grow up to 320mb (but not more). there are huge improvments in 4.6 in this regard
17:58.17windowshasyouKame2: Don't get me wrong, I'm a big supporter of kde and have occasionally submitted patches and such... its just getting to a point where I'm wondering if its worth it
17:58.49Kame2Linuxhippy: i don't say that all things are fine. just that it is not that bad for all user. i see not very much cpu-usage on normal work

18:04.54Linuxhippyif you dedicate your whole spare-time to implement a feature and get it rock-solid

21:27.41thiago_homemiasma: because pixmaps are stored in the X server
21:27.51thiago_homebotmind: noatun is not maintained
21:27.53miasmathiago_home: and when the kde app closes, the memory isn't freed. why?

21:28.23*** join/#kde messerting_ (~messertin@39.79-161-65.customer.lyse.net)
21:28.32miasmathiago_home: yes, it isn't returned to the OS. only the X process can reuse it for pixmaps
21:28.36miasmaand that's the problem
21:29.04miasmathiago_home: the X process grows to 3.3 GB here and the machine only has 4 GB of physical RAM
21:29.19miasmaafter 3 days of use
21:29.36thiago_homesounds like an X bug though
21:29.44thiago_homeI run X for 40+ days or more
21:29.51thiago_homeit does reach 400-500 MB
21:29.55thiago_homebut not more than that
21:29.57miasmait only happens when viewing large pictures. e.g. in akregator, gwenview etc.
21:30.05miasmai deal with 15..20 MPix images
21:31.14miasmathiago_home: but that's still pretty much e.g. in LTSP environments where there are 50+ users using the same server
21:31.41miasmawould be useful if the X process could compact itself
21:31.46thiago_homeyes
21:31.57thiago_homeusually that's a driver issue, though
21:31.58miasmaok, so it's a fundamental problem with X and nothing can be done?
21:32.17miasmai use proprietary nvidia drivers so I guess I'm out of luck
21:32.18thiago_homethe memory is actually on the GPU and is simply mapped to RAM
21:32.30miasmawould running a 64-bit kernel help ?
21:32.40thiago_homeruns 32-bit
21:32.44thiago_homeand nvidia blob drivers
21:32.53thiago_homeyou can also recompile X with a different malloc
21:32.59miasmainteresting
21:33.04thiago_homesome other implementations do return memory to the OS
21:33.04miasmaI could try that
