09:32.10_abc_Hi. I need to time my entrances better to talk to North American developers heh. I'm in Europe, timezone issues.
09:33.52_abc_Anyway, wrt speeding up the browser, firefox, in devuan jessie live (and not only): I made that script fsmithred copied, it's way overkill. After a lot of testing, it's enough to tmpfs mount /home/devuan/.cache/modzilla/firefox/$profile_name with a preset size like 256MB (seems to be enough for most things I do, never fills more than 160MB or so). This makes for a tremendous speedup.
09:34.27_abc_The command is simply: sudo mount -t tmpfs -o size=$TMPFS_CACHE_SZ tmpfs $TMPFS_CACHE_MOUNT_POINT
09:35.02_abc_Where TMPFS_CACHE_SZ=256m and TMPFS_CACHE_MOUNT_POINT=/home/devuan/.cache/mozilla/firefox/$profile_name
09:35.45_abc_Turn on swap on some swappable disk partition to make more room if there's not enough ram. I use the above with only 1GB ram and it seems to not need swapping excepting when I go overboard with 10 tabs open, libreoffice open and a few other things.

09:36.38_abc_note: bookmarking in ff is still very slow, the bookmarks are in ~/.mozilla/firefox/$profile_name ; and not accelerated by the above command
09:36.40_abc_---
09:37.45_abc_new topic: when using the live system with persistence, it SHOULD be arranged for the kernel to run fsck on the to-be-mounted persistence volume. This is tricky because only volumes marked for persistence should be fsck'd. So, what I propose it:
09:37.50_abc_*is
09:38.26_abc_a) in the script, proceed as till now, until a persistence volume is found and validated (has persistence.conf), but mount it read-only!
09:38.48*** join/#devuan B-2 (stealth@sourcemage/archon/stealth)
09:39.06_abc_b) run fsck on it c) remount rw if succeeded, else raise an error, probably in the text mode boot terminal lines.
09:39.23Guest98580_abc_: bookmarks are in /home/devjuan/.mozilla/firefox/883qawck.default/places.sqlite
09:39.39Guest98580am i wrong?
09:40.29_abc_This is a simple change but needed, since currently after a persistent volume live system crash, the persistent data is mounted with errors and all, repeatedly. I once got to three reboots into it before I noticed the mount dirty message in dmesg for unrelated reasons and backtracked.
09:40.56_abc_Guest98580: you are right but accessing the whole thing should be accelerated since there is more to it, cookies, passwords, indexes thereof etc

09:41.24*** join/#devuan _systemd_is_evil (~NOsystemd@unaffiliated/mailjesus)
09:41.28_abc_Guest98580: my script from last week does this, copying the whole /home/devjuan/.mozilla/firefox/$profile_name out, then tmpfs mounting it, and copying it back in
09:41.45_abc_Then at ff session end, saves the tmpfs tree back to persistence
09:41.51Guest98580ok :)
09:42.15_abc_Except my script naively also saved and restored the cache, which is not needed.
09:42.35_abc_New version script does not save the cache at all, and leaves the $profile in place
09:42.46_abc_This makes for slow bokmarks etc
09:43.11_abc_So the best way is to a) tmpfs mount the cache b) tmpfs mount the profile and copy it in/out for restoration
09:43.30_abc_Right now I am running with only a) and it is okay excepting for painfully slow bookmark operations

14:41.54fsmithredif you want to keep two systems in sysc, maybe an rsync script would do it
14:43.42_abc_Well one is interested in a full package list to install on a new installed system, copying the ones on an old or live one. Which is my case.
14:43.57fsmithreddpkg --get-selections
14:44.05fsmithreddpkg --set-selections

15:47.59_abc_Also how does one edit the devuan jessie graphical boot menu? Tab does not open an editable line, c does, but it is blank, not prefilled
15:48.04fsmithred_abc_, there's no console-only boot
15:48.11_abc_uh? Why not?
15:48.20fsmithreddevuan-live uses standard debian runlevels
15:48.27_abc_It is useful when the graphics system is balky
15:48.43fsmithredrunlevels 2-5 are multi-user graphical
15:49.06fsmithredI agree - that's why I make runlevel 3 cli only in Refracta isos
15:49.13_abc_okay
15:49.34_abc_3 is the default graphical runlevel on slackware and historically ;/

15:50.02_abc_Also on knoppix. Dr. knopper also turned away from systemd in his latest releases. Maybe some cross polination with devuan would be in order?
15:50.13fsmithredwell, sidux and a few others used 3
15:50.18_abc_Yes but it has to be on the live disk. No way to edit it while it is on live
15:50.29_abc_3 was the "traditional" gui runlevel
15:50.32fsmithredredhat and suse have (had?) 2 and 3 for non-graphical
15:50.47fsmithredyou can change it if you have full persistence
15:50.56_abc_I ran suse from cca. 1999 till 2003 or so
15:51.01_abc_Don't remember that detail

15:51.22_abc_sometimes
15:51.27_abc_Anyway, noted, thanks.
15:51.41_abc_Okay, break time, will be back
15:52.00fsmithredyou can set up persistence in a live session, then reboot into it
15:52.33_abc_You need to be able to boot to do that. I have old video cards which go black when the video mode switches. vga=normal does not help
15:52.35fsmithredyou won't be able to edit the boot menu
15:53.20fsmithredI'm confused. Don't you need to be able to boot to use it?
15:57.36_abc_hm? Of course I can't edit the boot menu. But I assume the edited inittab is read from persistence if edited.
15:58.14_abc_To set it up, I need to boot the stick in another system, and set that gui less runlevel, then I can boot in that runlevel in the real system and try to make the video card behave.
15:58.43fsmithredah, ok
