12:55.51dpkgIn buster, su no longer overrides PATH by default, requiring that you use "su -" or "su -l" for login shells (which is not really a new thing at all...). 16:20.13kittoniani don't understand why i need to setup a secondary dns of 8.8.8.8 on all my network devices now, when it was working just fine before
16:20.30kittonianno, that's not what I asked
16:20.31*** join/#debian Anessen97_2 (~Anessen97@host-87-30-149-19.business.telecomitalia.it)
16:20.57kittonianthis box, running debian, is running bind for our internal dns and forwarding all external requests to 8.8.8.8 for resolution
16:21.02nvzyou didnt /ask/ anything.. you just put a bunch of confusing information in the channel numerous times
16:21.17kittonianso all devices on the LAN only have 10.0.0.4 (the eth0 ip address of this box) as their dns
16:21.32nvzI may not be able to help, but I can tell you no one else can either if we can't get concisely to what the actual issue/question is
16:22.04kittonianbut since I had to create an ip alias of 10.0.0.252 on eth0:1 and setup eth1 to be the dhcp address of the cable modem, I also had to change the default gw to be the ip assigned to the cable modem
16:22.32nvzI'm only feeling farther away from the issue the more you say
16:22.40kittoniannow, all my LAN devices need to have 8.8.8.8 as their dns server in order to pass traffic as 10.0.0.4 is no longer resolving external requests
16:23.06nvzall I can gather so far is that you're only getting dns on clients when you configure google dns on each client
16:23.14kittoniancorrect
16:23.19nvzmy first question would be, does the router itself have dns through the isp?
16:23.29nvzcan it resolve addresses?

16:24.25kittoniani need to somehow route 10.0.0.4 dns requests to the same default gw as the rest of the box
16:24.37kittonianthis is all a route issue
16:24.59greycatkittonian: Start at the beginning.  You're logged in directly on the box where bind is running.  You test with "dig @127.0.0.1 A www.debian.org".  Does it work?
16:25.16kittonianyes it does
16:25.22kittonianand hi greycat. it's been a while
16:25.34kittoniani can ping google.com, etc.
16:25.38kittonianeverything works on the box directly
16:25.45greycatOK, good.  Now, from the SAME box, figure out what its local IP address is (from ip a, or whatever), and try dig @local.ip A www.debian.org
16:26.16greycatIn my case it's 192.168.2.3 so I test with dig @192.168.2.3 A www.debian.org
16:26.20kittoniandig: couldn't get address for 'local.ip': not found

16:28.31greycatSo "dig @10.0.0.4 A www.debian.org" worked, but with a delay?
16:28.33*** join/#debian level3 (level3@gateway/shell/tilde.team/x-kbqqktmgbmishkrz)
16:28.35kittonianoriginally, the other box running pfsense had an ip of 10.0.0.252 so I config'd an eth0:1 alias with the same ip so I didn't have to change every device on the LAN
16:28.55kittonianyes, there was a bit of a delay, but both ips worked with the dig command
16:29.32greycatI don't have any clue what would cause a delay in that situation.  Is BIND trying to reverse-resolve your LAN IP address and failing, maybe?  I don't even know why it would try.
16:30.32kittonianmaybe, i have a feeling it has to do with the change in route, the new ip alias, and the iptables entries I had to put in. plus I had to enable packet forwarding
16:30.56kittonianthis was originally nothing more than a dumb box running bind and the unifi controller
16:31.12kittoniannow i'm asking it to be a network router of sorts and things got a bit screwy it seems

Script is launched with root crontab @reboot, properly deletes itself but does not remove the user (no output at all for deluser or userdel cmds). My guess is that @reboot cron job run at a runlevel where managing other users isn't possible, is that correct? Also I'm testing with systemd oneshot type right now but it seems a bit convoluted
18:46.50Asharasfor such simple and ephemeral task. Any idea to share? Thanks in advance!
18:51.08greycatAs far as I'm aware, the only thing you need to remove a local user is for the root file system to be mounted read-write, which should definitely happen before cron jobs fire.

18:52.32Asharasmakes sense but then I don't understand why the command doesn't run. I'm spinning up a VM to run it at different runlevels and test that.

21:09.26dadinnannadane: The issue is that when I explicitly try to install linux-image-amd64 it works fine and the backports version is going to be installed.
21:10.28dadinnannadane: but when I am trying to install zfs-dkms, then linux-headers from the buster release (4.19.*) would be choosen as dependency... even though the pinning says I want the version from backports
21:10.57nvzbackports should by default be 100, and the debian mirrors 500
21:11.14dadinnannadane: so it seems that the pinning is ignored for transitive (i.e. automatic) installs
21:12.18dadinnnvz: I thought 1000 means: "causes a version to be installed even if it does not come from the target release, unless the installed version is more recent."

21:38.18dadinnnvz: if I understand there is no better way to get around this than to dublicate the logic testing for Debian version and ZFS
21:38.33dadinn* if I understand correctly
21:40.24nvzI can't understand that AT ALL much less correctly :P
21:43.03dadinnnvz: no worries, I will try to do this without pinning. Thanks

21:59.13lenswipeHey folks. I'm connecting to a VPN using network manager. There seems to be an issue with the routes that are being configured when I join the VPN - specifically, it tries to reach hosts on the VPN through my router (which obviously knows nothing about anything on the VPN)
21:59.39lenswipeNow, I could manually update my routing table - but my last debian install - debian 9 this wasn't required and things just worked when i connected
21:59.42lenswipehas something changed
22:05.02quadrathoch2lenswipe if I remember correctly 9 -> 10 was the switch to systemd-resolved, which had dns leak issues. but I am not sure if they were ever fixed
