14:19.58blast007so, since I'm planning to gut out c-ares for Windows, do we want to get rid of it completely?  or do some platforms we care about still need c-ares for async DNS?
15:20.05BulletCatcherBZFlag requires asynchronous DNS lookups on all platforms.
15:20.10BulletCatcherc-ares has met that need well until recently, so if a not-quite-the-newest version would work on Windows that would save us from major changes.
15:20.15BulletCatcherOtherwise, something like http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/adns/ could save us from completely reinventing that wheel.
15:20.17BulletCatcherUntil we know more about the replacement it would be nice to keep c-ares as a compile-time option.

16:13.31blast007hmm, I can't recall if I've tried an older version of c-ares since I knew how to reproduce the issue.

22:17.05blast007BulletCatcher: ack, seems that c-ares 1.7.1 does work (as in, no delay).  Got it to build once I slightly tweaked the Makefile.msvc to correctly detect my version as VC10. And now I'm really curious what they did that broke it...

23:45.46blast007works with 1.7.4 as well.. so seems like 1.7.5 broke something
