IRC log for #bzflag on 20141220

00:40.55mtnbkrhey blast007, I am playing around with a map and trying to reporduce a simple meshbox "spun' on a 45 degree angle like the example at the bottom of this page: http://wiki.bzflag.org/Editing_by_Hand
00:41.18mtnbkrmy box however, is wierdly 'floating' under the ground
00:41.51blast007got a screenshot?  and what exact transformation(s) are you using on it?
00:42.10mtnbkrI say weirdly because it doe snot appear to be at the x/y/z location on the map as defined, but under the map, "in the distance"
00:42.18mtnbkrI can get a screenshot...
00:43.45mtnbkrscreenshot will show the 30x300x5 meshbox but without motion you can not really tell it is acting like a piece of the distant scenery
00:44.23mtnbkrOh wait... the fact that it is under other boxes should help :)   brb
00:44.56mtnbkrmeshbox def is:  meshbox

00:47.14blast007are you trying to make it effectively a ramp?
00:47.21mtnbkrheh
00:47.23mtnbkrnot yet
00:48.30blast007I do think the order of transformations matters
00:48.36mtnbkrI have enabed the shot gravity option (forget the name)  and wanted a few 45 degree floating boxes so people could jump/shoot/ricochet off of
00:49.00blast007_shotsKeepVerticalVelocity (or similar)
00:49.02mtnbkrright now, I would actually be happy with the exact example they give
00:49.27mtnbkryeah that is the option I have enabled in the map. :)   the people we play with like it too
00:49.53mtnbkralso my box is only 30x300 (so I could spot it more easily)
00:50.35mtnbkrthe red and blue paths are fast moving conveyors in opposite directions. :)
00:54.08mtnbkrI am actually just goofing around by hand with a (big) map that was originally a random map.   cleaning some things up, adding some things from the Internet, and doing a few manual basic things (teleporters from middle to all four center walls, CW and CCW conveyors to center wall locations).   it is usually running at bzflag.revpol.com:55555
00:54.46blast007if you shift it up 30 before you do the spin, the bottom edge will rest on the ground
00:55.13blast007but then of course the top edge of that side will be above the ground
00:55.42blast007probably be better off using an actual mesh
00:57.27mtnbkrnot fluent enough in all the types of objects, especially not manually by hand :)
00:58.20mtnbkrI think I tried the shift up first... but... 10, not 30... lemme see if that gets me at least to the example results, on that page  thanks.
01:00.38mtnbkryeah, that's still producing the same 'below the ground in the far distance' results.

01:29.49leemarblast007, thank you for helping, it's an issue between my and the server I'm using.  I just connected to a game with 8 players and my bzflag reported FPS is ~ 55-60
01:31.12blast007mtnbkr: oh!  it's probably because of the position.  maybe use a shift after the spin to move the X or Y coordinates instead of using position.
01:31.51blast007position probably doesn't move the "center" of the object, so the center is still at 0,0,0, thus when you shift it rotates it into the ground
01:32.10blast007sorry, when you spin it it rotates it into the ground

01:39.33therealtbewanna play grassroots babel?
01:43.06mtnbkrblast007: ah!  right... because the example is at position 0 0 0 , then shifted !  got it...
01:43.50mtnbkrblast007: leemar has slow fps on MY server, but not others.   I have rain, fog and a few things enabled could any of those settings be a cause?
01:44.15blast007still sounds like it might not be fully using his GPU
01:45.30mtnbkrblast007: but he gets decent fps on other (even other large) maps with lots of players
01:47.48leemarblast007, I'm getting 50-60 FPS when playing in games with 9 and 18 people
01:48.05leemarsmooth as can be, but, only mtnbkr's server I get 9-11 FPS
01:49.47therealtbehave you tried disabling these fancy effects...
01:52.08leemarmtnbkr: but just me and we have a mutual friend connecting smooth ~ 60

01:53.56blast007I think the rain is the FPS killer.  On my system, I was getting around 135FPS with rain enabled, but I could get over 600 with rain turned off.
01:54.05mtnbkroh wow
01:54.17blast007leemar: go into the menu, then Options > Effect Settings  and turn off rain (or at least turn it down a lot)
01:54.18mtnbkrplayer can turn rain off
01:54.19Patlabor221ohh yeah, I was NOT efficent with rain
01:54.30Patlabor221rain was made as a praink
01:54.35blast007heh
01:54.49mtnbkr:)
01:54.59leemarthat was it!
01:55.00Patlabor221I think it actualy draws rain behind you
01:55.03mtnbkr\o/
01:55.06leemarI turned rain off and I'm getting ~60 FPS
01:55.19mtnbkrI'll kill it server-side then
01:55.47Patlabor221ohh yeah the ATI cards don't like the depth buffer tricks too
01:55.50mtnbkrok off.
01:55.57blast007people would always complain when I turned on snow around Christmas.. ;)
01:56.06Patlabor221GL3 would make it much simpler
01:56.20leemarshould fog be nice or fast?
01:56.27Patlabor221fog should be super fast
01:56.29mtnbkrblast007: is there any way the gravityaffectsshots can be disabled per weapon?  it is cool for all but laser
01:56.36Patlabor221fog is just a simple depth blend
01:56.42Patlabor221it's basic glFog
01:56.44blast007mtnbkr: nope, all or nothing
01:56.44Patlabor221no shaders
01:56.58mtnbkrblast007: had fingers crossed :)
01:57.16Patlabor221mtnbkr, the bzflag simulation system is not that complicated
01:57.27Patlabor221it's just a variable used in some common math
01:57.48mtnbkrblast007: earler you mentioned i was seeing 60fps due to verticl sync... where is that set, and if I unset it will I see better results?
01:58.02Patlabor221it may be set at the driver level
01:58.13mtnbkrahh ok
01:58.14Patlabor221and bzflag does not perform well at very high FPS
01:58.24mtnbkrI am quite happy at 60fps
01:58.34Patlabor221many people can not see more then that
01:58.50leemarblast007: I did also switch to stock kernel and same results earlier... :P
02:00.44blast007leemar: k, so just the rain raining on your parade then ;)
02:01.06therealtbemine always reports crazy high fps anyways
02:01.24blast007physics actually gets screwed up at high FPS
02:01.51therealtbesometimes i bounce off walls
02:01.53blast007iirc, it was difficult or next to impossible to get on the jump pads in MW2.3 with too high of an FPS
02:01.56blast007yeah
02:02.03Patlabor221it's slightly better in 2.4 but not awesome
02:02.24Patlabor221I think my constants are too high
02:02.52therealtbeI think my fps is incorrectly reported tho
02:02.59therealtbemy video card is good, but not that good
02:03.10Patlabor221bzflag isn't that complex
02:03.15Patlabor221REALY
02:03.43Patlabor221bzflag was designed to get 30 fps on a 200mhz Pentium 2 with a NV1
02:05.17Patlabor221it hasn't changed much from that ;)
02:05.40Patlabor221well I guess we did force the use of hardware depth buffer
02:06.48Patlabor221I'm sorry NV3 not NV1, nothing ran on the edge card
02:08.06leemarthank you all for your help!  I should have just tried connected to other servers earlier

14:08.35uso_wso I can use bzflag.org as hostname instead of my.bzflag.org or will that change sometimes soon?
14:08.54uso_wcan I use*
14:11.23uso_wnever mind, it does not work for the web server, it seems to have virtual domains
14:32.26uso_wto me it looks like the domain bzexess.com is not properly registered on the root servers, so any result you get now is probably cached and the entry will sooner or later expire for everyone, but I'm not a DNS expert ;)
14:32.44blast007the nameservers were switched yesterday
14:32.59blast007it's working fine on OpenDNS and Google Public DNS
14:33.13uso_wwouldn't it make sense anyway to resolve hosts in bzflag.org directly in the bzflag.org domain and not reroute it through bzexess.com?
14:33.28blast007then I can't easily change them
14:33.44uso_wok, that's a reason
